You need to know the Church, warts and all, and you need to know it's difficult to keep an Eastern spirituality going unless you're well-served by Byzantine parishes. You need to know you're doing it for God so there is no buyer's remorse.

I’ve been afraid to say this: I’ve been discerning Catholicism for a little while now. But it’s been niggling on my conscience for around two years. Through a lot of reading, soul searching and prayer, I feel like I’ve been led to embrace the Catholic Church.

Before Vatican 2: We don't want to hear that you're gay. You're going to hell fire. After Vatican 2: You may experience same-sex attraction, but don't act on it. If you do, you've committed grave sin. Repent, go to Confession, and come back to Christ. We all know which approach is more likely to win souls for Jesus.

@GaardoWealth @simongerman600 With notable exceptions, most people I know who formed their relationships back then are either divorced or miserable, and statistics seem to suggest that experience is far from being merely anecdotal. Hardly an endorsement of liquid courage.

I consider this a severe problem in Australia. Culturally drinking a bit of beer has lots of positives. In Australia it is part of the general easy going nature. Pricing people out of their evening beer is doing more social harm than health (and tax) good. Beer must become cheaper again! HT @IFM_Economist

What everyone ignores is the trouble present in the statement "believe in evolution". If the argument for evolution is "scientific", then it is not to be "believed" but proven by reproducible material evidence. If the argument for evolution is "rational", then it is not to be "believed", but proven by demonstration. To believe in evolution, it would be necessary that God revealed the fact of evolution and one has received that revelation from God regardless of evidence. Where has God revealed the fact of evolution?

"Can Catholics believe in evolution?" No. First, evolution is not an article of faith revealed by God, so it is not something to be "believed in". Nor does one reason from any revealed truth or combination of revealed truths to evolution. Second, as a scientific theory, it is unproven and undemonstrated. So, no one, let alone Catholics, can speak of it as true in the sense of scientific knowledge. If it were demonstrated philosophically or proven by repeatable experimental testing, then it would be knowledge, and no one could deny it. As it is, it is neither demonstrated, nor proven.

Prior to the Council of Trent in 1545 there was no such thing as an agreed upon “Roman Catholic Bible.” Cardinal Ximenez (who died in 1517 - the very year Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg) in the preface to his Complutensian Polyglot Bible described the 7 books of the Deutercanon as “books outside the canon.” He explains that their purpose is to be “received by the Church rather for the edification of the people than for the authoritative confirmation of ecclesiasitcal doctrines.” In essence, Ximenes’s position was: valuable and edifying for Christians, but outside the primary canon and insufficient by themselves to establish doctrine.
