We should not assume that Karmelo Anthony’s defense attorneys did a bad job. We don’t know what advice they gave to the family and if that family followed the advice. We don’t know if they advised the family to take a plea. As far as we know the defense actually did a good job. The defense may have restrained the family from doing more damage than was already done which could have landed Karmelo an even worse sentence. Calling more witnesses could have inflamed the jury. Putting Karmelo on the witness stand could have inflamed the jury. Turning the trial into a ghetto clown show might have landed Karmelo 99 years. Karmelo getting 35 years for murder is actually a pretty good outcome when you consider the family is a total disaster and could have screwed things up a lot worse.

But he didn’t fear for his life. And it wasn’t proportional. And he was the aggressor. It’s pretty clear he had zero evidence of self defense

The aggressive nature of immediately stabbing someone to death eclipses a that of a light shove, or to use a more relatable example - stepping on someone's shoes. There's no court in the world where they'd be seen as equally aggressive.
