An Indigenous tribe in California is suing the U.S. government to prevent the removal of nearly 90 percent of its wild horse herd from ancestral lands. The Utu Utu Gwaitu Paiute Tribe opposes federal plans to remove 624 wild horses from the Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory along the California Nevada border. The U.S. Forest Service maintains that the current population exceeds the land's sustainable carrying capacity. According to its management plan, the area can support only 130 to 238 horses. Officials argue that the larger herd damages vegetation and poses safety risks. Tribal leaders strongly reject this assessment. They emphasize that the horses have coexisted with their people for generations and form an integral part of their cultural identity, history, and spiritual connection to the land. The tribe claims that federal authorities approved the removal without adequate consultation or proper evaluation of impacts on sacred sites. The lawsuit also challenges the scientific basis for the operation. Court documents note that the most recent population survey occurred in 2024 and failed to account for significant winter losses following harsh weather in 2023. Wild horse management remains one of the most contentious wildlife issues in the western United States. In areas without natural predators, herds can expand quickly, leading to increased pressure on forage and competition for water with native species and livestock. Federal agencies conduct periodic gathers to reduce numbers they deem excessive. However, many tribes, conservation organizations, and animal welfare advocates contend that such removals are often overly aggressive or do not adequately consider local ecological realities. The tribe seeks a court order to stop the roundup before it begins. For tribal members, the issue extends far beyond standard wildlife management. They view these horses as living embodiments of cultural heritage that cannot simply be replaced.

Explaining the rules without a link to the actual rules is suss. Why should we believe you? Who even are you? Manatees are in danger whether they are hunted or not. These changes make these gentle creatures even more at risk. Also, calling the pushback "hysteria" isn’t neutral; it’s a loaded term with a long history of dismissing valid concerns as mere emotion rather than engaging with the substance. If you’re just "explaining the rules" why editorialize the response to them?

Correct, and by actually explaining what the rule says, we can cut through the hysteria, while also giving people the on it's face interpretation of the rule which they can then use for themselves to fight for more protections, if that is what they believe in. We are just not in the business of telling adults what they should think. We simply explain conservation, regulation, and food and drug rules and laws and let people form their own opinions based on what the language actually says.

Two dogs were left completely alone in an Oklahoma apartment for nearly a week after their owners were deported - ICE picked the owner up directly from that apartment so they knew without question that those animals were inside, but no call was ever made to animal control. The apartment manager was the one who finally noticed something was wrong and made the call. By the time the animal welfare officer got there the place was destroyed - furniture chewed through, trash dug up, two terrified dogs cowering in the back bedroom trembling and barking. The officer made it clear his issue was not political - he said he would make the same call against any agency that left animals behind in that condition and that it is standard protocol to notify animal control any time an arrest leaves pets alone in a home. If you own animals and face any kind of uncertain situation there needs to be someone designated to care for them.

The bear in this video died after being electrocuted on the pole bc it was too scared by the people filming it to come down. The agency responsible for wildlife and public education turned its suffering into a meme. Posts like this teach people to film distressed animals for the lols instead of calling wildlife officials or keeping a safe distance.

That bear died bc it was too scared to come down - people took photos and videos not giving it space and New Mexico Dept of Wildlife, Union County sheriff's, and the power company didn’t do their jobs and force the public back so it had space to climb down. Too many care more about documenting and not enough about doing the right thing.

I love dogs and don’t like seeing them like that… at all. My point isn’t about the dogs. Why is EVERYTHING ALWAYS ICE’s fault? In legalese, “but for” these people entering our country illegally, those dogs would never have been there. Put the blame where it belongs. Secure borders and real accountability fix this—not scapegoating the people enforcing the law.

Ah gotcha. Yes, it’s complicated bc it depends on a lot of factors. But there’s research showing the airway cilia can be seriously impaired within about 30 mins to a few hours of breathing dense wildfire smoke, depending on how high the particle levels are and what’s in the plume (wood smoke, chemicals, microbes, fungal spores, etc.). Once those cilia slow down, it’s easier for a bacterial infection to take hold over the next day or so.

Correct, the smoke causes inflammation not a bacterial infection. However, it increases susceptibility to respiratory infections because it damages the motile cilia. Essentially, those celia push mucus with the trapped particles up the throat so you cough or swallow them. If they are damaged then your body can’t clear any particles or pathogens as easily, thus increasing chances of a respiratory ailment.
