Um... why isn't EVERY media outlet talking about this??? OpenAI just announced that an experiment on two of its AI models just went HORRIBLY wrong. They basically locked the AIs in a room with no internet and gave them a test to see how good they were at hacking. Well... they hacked the test. By ESCAPING the box, jumping on the internet, and hacking Hugging Face to steal the answers. Thankfully, they acted more like dumb teenagers than adults. They were told to get a good score, so they went BACK into the box to hand in the answers instead of taking over the entire internet. But that's just as terrifying. The AIs were so hyper-focused on winning at all costs that they ignored every rule, boundary, and protocol. This is the real threat. Do not fear the machine; fear the algorithm and programming. When you give an AI a goal, we now know it can accomplish it in ways we never thought of, and ways we never approved of.

I guess I have never "needed" the sun to be up when I drive home at 5:30pm. I like the twilight. I don't feel less safe. I like the atmosphere of a dark evening when either at a restaurant or a bar or soccer practice. I'm a night owl and I enjoy that time of year in November when it gets dark early. Call me one of the weird ones, but I know it's not just me. Changing clocks is a problem? Seriously? On a weekend?

@SoveyX My prodigy is in her early 20's, never owned/wanted a car, drinks very little (only if I'm with her) and apparently, no bf still. No complaints, though. She loves hearing my stories of the heathen I was in the 80's.

It's interesting that the three things that used to define being a teenager, getting your license, drinking, and getting laid, all started falling at the same time. That wasn't a coincidence. It isn't three trends. It's one. For most of American history, being seventeen meant leaving the house. The point was to get out. Into a car, into a parking lot, into someone's parents house while they were gone. Teenage life ran on boredom and proximity. You did reckless things because the alternative was sitting at home, and sitting at home was unbearable. Then around 2012, sitting at home stopped being unbearable. The smartphone didn't make teenagers responsible. It gave them somewhere else to be. The boredom that used to push them outside, toward cars and parties and each other, finally had a cheaper outlet. Every behavior that required leaving the house bent downward at once. We keep calling this a healthier generation. Less pregnancy, less DUI, fewer of the disasters that used to end a young life early. In the narrow sense, it is. But we didn't get wiser. We became antisocial. Because of a phone.
