@Anapecalleddave I do have my doubts about the comparison, but to be fair, you’ve genuinely presented the most solid argument of anyone yet, aside from the fact I do think bookies have changed a lot, it’s a valid point, if we could see the pre tournament odds I think it would be a stronger point

@TG2872 Commencing odds for top sides were similar to now, just aren't archived online or behind paywalls. Liverpool maybe bit shorter but had been best side in Europe for years. No idea why you think not a strong argument.

Nottingham Forest didn’t win an elite competition and we all need to stop pretending they did, the European Cup wasn’t even that big then, Malmo in the final! This should never be compared to modern day UCL run.

@GrahamTuckwood @jtweets1865 If you lost one leg you could win the second it’s the same as the knockouts now? By the time a team gets to the knockouts they’ll be in the same position as a side like Forest were when they started their campaign

@TG2872 @jtweets1865 You’re proper splitting hairs mate doesn’t matter if the tie was over one or two legs if you lost you were out. Forest beat the best in Europe back to back in the highest competition on offer.

@HenryForesteri0 This is another argument that doesn’t make much sense, group stage just means you have to get past another stage before the knockouts, the more games the more likely you are to be knocked out.

Someone said check the UEFA Coefficients, so I did. PSG and Forest last 5 opponents in winning campaigns Avg place last 5 opponents: PSG 11.6 | Forest 34.1 Top 10 ranked opponents: PSG 7/10 | Forest 3/10 Highest faced: PSG (1st, 1st, 3rd) | Forest (4th, 6th, 10th) #nffc

@AnthonyBailey4 It also today has all the champions involved, just more quality teams on top of that

@jbkeyo German champions who finished 6th that season, in today’s format they’d have to play the team that won the German league that season. Grasshoppers were relatively a decent side, but didn’t do much else, still more difficult to come up against the mega sides of today

@TG2872 They beat the reigning European champions. They beat the German champions in the Semi-Final. Grasshoppers beat Real Madrid. 🤷‍♂️

@TG2872 @jtweets1865 For a start you had to win your domestic league to be in it. Then you couldn’t lose or you would be out. It was a format for genuine league winners to compete and decide who the champions of Europe were and it was back to back Forest any talk of cheapening that is ridiculous.

@Anapecalleddave My mistake, misunderstood, but again I think comparing quarter final to quarter final 1983-2026 bookies odds aren’t a strong argument

@Anapecalleddave Liverpool were 6/1 this season as champions, yet 13/8 in 1983.

@Anapecalleddave I’ve found odds of 7/1 for Arsenal at the start of the season vs 13/8 for Liverpool in what you just sent, that proves what I’m saying if anything? Not that I think bookies odds are the best metric but still

@Anapecalleddave Forest and PSG/Arsenal are not only not equivalents but where’s the source for them being 15/1 anyway? Bookies aren’t exactly the same now as they were in 1978

@TG2872 Forest were about 15/1 at tournament start while PSG and Arsenal were both around 7/1 this year so bookies disagree with you.

@TG2872 There weren't any club coefficients back then so no idea what you think this is or says.

@Anapecalleddave If you think it’s evens then I’m sorry but you’re miles off, Arsenal have a far greater chance this season with the old format, it’s not even remotely close. You’re arguing that taking more quality teams out is somehow as hard as if they were included.

@TG2872 You mean today's Forest or one which is the best team in England and so equivalent to Arsenal now? Because it's about evens in latter case.

@Anapecalleddave Here’s a side by side comparison, it still doesn’t even really give the full story but it’s a useful way to see many of the top sides from one year to the next were avoided, something that doesn’t happen now x.com/tg2872/status/…

@TG2872·
@Anapecalleddave There’s a simple question, would Forest have a better chance at winning the competition now in its current format or winning it now in its old format? Answer is old format, that combined with the other factors are why it was easier for them to win it than it is for teams today.

Aside from that season Malmo never made it past the 2nd round of the European Cup, finished 2nd in the league and their top goalscorers had 6 league goals. Squad was mostly Swedish players, many with caps for a country that didn’t qualify for a major tournament for 12 years.

@Anapecalleddave Honestly not very arguable at all, Malmo were a shock to be in the final, despite being regulars in the tournament, Forest were there for the first time but expected to win against Malmo. Country by country you could argue it sure, but for many there’s not much of a debate

@TG2872 Arguable and gap in resources certainly nothing like today. Had to beat all those other teams as well to get there. Could add Portugal, Scotland and Belgium as well. Probably around 6-7 realistic winners each year, similar to now but without assured qualification.

@Anapecalleddave Forest play Koln who finish 6th that year, Stuttgart finished 2nd that year, finished 3rd and 4th multiple times and made a UEFA Cup semi final and eventually won the league in 84, they were potentially a more dangerous side than Koln but because of the format were avoided

@Anapecalleddave Exactly, so the major nations clubs were still dominant, top clubs in major nations still had the top players from that country, countries that often achieved more than your Sweden’s and Switzerlands, those big clubs were still better even then
