I've been critical of Dobson's defense through much of his career but I don't fault him for hardly anything that happened to MTL last night. He played largely pretty well. The issue with MTL will continue to be how unengaged most of their forwards are defensively, particularly in the neutral zone.
Again and again and again teams can attack MTL's defense at speed after moving smoothly through the neutral zone. There's a huge problem with how they defend in those spaces. That's where they have to get better.
You have to be able, as a team, to slow teams down as they transition through the neutral zone.

Head coach of the Barrie Colts, Dylan Smoskowitz, and their captain, Kashawn Aitcheson, had very few words for their post-game media following their game 7 win in the OHL Eastern Conference Final. This was a very tough watch, and I would love to hear their explanation for this 😬

@islanders_takes They are definitely better defensively without him…like many offensive defenseman, he gets lost too often in the defensive end and is not physical enough for the playoffs.

MTL fans are probably going to find this and think it's hate on Dobson but they legitimately look so much better defensively on that right side without him in the lineup.
I'm not saying they're better without him. I'm just saying the defense there has been more engaged, higher effort, and better. They definitely don't break the puck out as well without him but they are closing and challenging and clearing the front much better.
Last night was their best effort. That was a really tough game up and down with TBL consistently finding ways to put pressure in moments and MTL having to consistently answer and steal momentum away on the road.
I've been extremely critical of MTL's chances through the playoffs. I see their lack of experience, particularly their coaching, as a major liability. But the defense is obviously playing very high-level right now and if they can sustain this (I'm still doubtful in later rounds/series they can) then they're an absolute unit.

@stefen_rosner Because rushing him isn’t fair to him or his development. He doesn’t need that pressure on him because the coach and the team have quit on the season. I’d rather him get quality minutes and good coaching in Bridgeport until next year.

Guys, we can't scream for 7 years that Barzal needs a guy to finish beside him and then when Schenn and Ritchie start to finish beside him start screaming that they're being carried by Barzal.
If the line works then the line works. If guys are doing their job on the line then they're doing their job.
