Government - and the public - need to grasp that Carer's Allowance, Universal Credit, PIP and legacy benefits are now woefully inadequate. They are not enough to live on with modern costs, especially for disabled people facing huge additional expenses.

Labour needs to understand this: disability benefits are not "generous". PIP standard daily living is £76.70 a week. Enhanced is £114.60. Scope says disabled households face £1,095 a month in extra costs. The gap is not small. It is structural poverty.

The biggest lie told to Britain was that welfare caused poverty. It didn't. Low pay, soaring housing costs, insecure work and decades of underinvestment caused poverty. Benefits were never generous - they were often inadequate even before cuts.

@DavidJReed100 The core structural problem is Britain has had c. 25 years of weak real wage growth across huge parts of the economy - not just low-skilled work. Housing, energy, transport and living costs surged ahead while incomes lagged behind.

@DavidJReed100 It's caused by inadequate income relative to the cost of living. Low skills can contribute to that, but so do weak wages, insecure work, disability, illness, caring responsibilities, housing costs and regional inequality. A full-time worker should not still be trapped in poverty.

Benefits only look "generous" because wages across Britain have been suppressed for decades. If someone thinks basic disability or unemployment support is a fortune, the real question is why so many full-time workers are being paid so little after 25 years of stagnation.

@m9QD6L4IgW Exactly - and that is the structural failure... Borrowing rises when growth is weak, productivity stagnates, wages fail to keep pace with costs and infrastructure declines. Welfare is being blamed for symptoms while the underlying economy has been deteriorating for decades.

Motability is not a luxury perk. For many disabled people it is the difference between isolation and being able to attend medical appointments, work, shop or participate in society at all.

@THemingford They give a living, a house, the opportunity to live a life and do good to a whole family. Maybe it's not luxury but you know, poverty and homelessness are much worse. Fact is that should be easier to make a living for a family with a job than with welfare, but it isn't.
