On the 30th April 1999, A nail bomb exploded at approximately 6:37 pm inside the Admiral Duncan pub on Old Compton Street in Soho, the heart of London’s gay community. It was the third and final attack in a 13-day campaign of far-right terrorism by 22-year-old neo-Nazi David Copeland, who had already detonated homemade nail bombs in Brixton (on the 17th April, targeting the Black community, where 48 people were injured) and Brick Lane (on the 24th April, targeting the Bangladeshi community, where 13 people were injured). The device; a sports bag containing around 1,500 4-inch nails packed around explosives, detonated in the busy pub on a warm Bank Holiday weekend evening. Three people were killed: Andrea Dykes, 27, who was four months pregnant (her unborn child also died) Nik Moore, 31 John Light, 32 (who had been asked to be godfather to Andrea’s baby) Seventy-nine people were injured, many seriously; four survivors required limb amputations. The confined space of the pub amplified the blast’s devastating effect. Copeland was arrested the next day (1st May) after police identified him from CCTV footage of the earlier attacks. He was convicted in 2000 of three counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder, and received six life sentences with a minimum tariff that keeps him imprisoned to this day. This event remains one of the most notorious examples of far-right terrorism in modern British history and is commemorated annually by the LGB community, the Met Police, and local remembrance events at the pub. Remembering all those whose lives were impacted by these horrific attacks.
