@Blaise_Corvin The first season or two had a lot of deep(ish) cut nerd humor about stuff like specific comic book runs, but they dropped that pretty quick.

Big Bang Theory. It laughs /at/ nerds and geeks, not with them. It enforces the stereotype that anyone brilliant needs to be socially maladjusted. I find the show obnoxious, the characters unlikeable.

@ajpwright I had to take a couple weeks off for editing and had to reread the whole WIP I started next just to get back into it. Breaks are rough to recover from.

Trying to get the first draft of Gods & Kings 2 finished by the end of the year, the writing process has been so stop-start over such a long time it’s a struggle to remember what’s happened previously at times. (My own fault entirely tbf.) But it’s getting there.

@scottlynch78 @Richard_Kadrey My secret was online games, specifically text based MUDs. You'll learn to type fast when the only thing keeping your elf alive is how quickly you can bang out "drink healing potion".

I wish I'd taken this class. I've written around 20 books and I remain, to put it charitably, a peculiar typist.

To all the hopeful authors out there: The golden age of easier discoverability is ending quickly or has already ended. Amazon has made their ecosystem much less noob-friendly, and much more expensive to be competitive in. Going wide takes even more skill and effort. However There are still a lot of opportunities in literature (maybe even more than before). I think now newbies need to work harder or be more strategic to take advantage of them, though. There will always be authors still just lucking into success, but I think that avenue is a lot narrower now than it used to be. My .02 is to keep your genre in mind while researching ways to grow your audience. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for every writer. Reader habits and reader tastes vary wildly genre-to-genre. In fact, methods can even vary quite a bit author-to-author. I have friends who write in the same genres as I do with very little reader overlap. Unfortunately, it can take a lot of trial and error to figure out what works for your brand and for your readers. Writing is art. Art can take a long time to turn into a career. It might never. I think we need to accept this to find the zen to keep going when we're not being read. And respect the readers. Without them, we're all just a bunch of weirdos with a keyboard, telling stories to ourselves..

@ac_cobble Unpopular opinion, I hate deckled edges. Feels like a broken book eaten by organized termites.

Sprayed edges, gilded edges, and designed edges are all the rage, but how do people feel about deckled (rough cut, uneven) page edges for a deluxe fantasy edition? Screams 'ancient tome' to me.
