I was recently invited to a bridal shower for a bride who has been living with her fiancé for a few years. They’re in their mid-20s, have full time jobs, and bought their first home last year. They’re settled. I followed the link to her registry and my mouth fell open. 🧵

@iam_preethi Don’t be afraid to ask for help. After my first I was thrown for a loop and my husband & mom were offering to help and I kept denying it because I felt I had to handle everything. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Things I wish every postpartum woman knew before her first baby: - Fluids. Lots and lots of fluids. Coconut water, fruit juices, broths, soups, electrolytes. You NEED the hydration. - Your hormones are doing the steepest drop they will ever do. The mood swings are biological. - You will not feel like yourself for a while. That does not mean something is wrong. - Eat more than you think you need, especially if breastfeeding. - Only invite people who actually help YOU. Not just the ones who want to hold the baby. - Do not ignore your pelvic floor. It feels small now but it makes a huge difference for future pregnancies and your long term health. - The first 3 months postpartum are a time of renewal and growth. Honor them. - Go for walks as soon as you can. They are gentle on your pelvic floor and help heal your core while getting your blood flowing for recovery. - Get outside more with your baby. Such a simple thing can transform the early days when you feel a little trapped. - Learn side-lying breastfeeding once your baby gets good at nursing. It can be a lifesaver for your sleep. - If you need to use some formula for your sanity or your sleep, it is not the end of the world. - Enjoy the solo time with your first baby. That level of undivided attention only happens once. What else would you add?

@davidmarcus Anecdotal, but in line with your observation. I have a friend who lives in Brentwood - she is not major into politics, but for national elections always votes D. Anyways, she went out with a group of mom friends - all voting Pratt.

The @ScottAdamsSays School announces the sad news that Scott’s ex-wife and caretaker, Shelly Adams, passed away recently. The news was withheld until now at the family’s request. She was an extraordinary person. youtube.com/live/ZUwc4ZaSa…

@Riley_Gaines_ This happened to me after my 2nd. I sent an appeal to try and get an itemized bill to make sure I wasn’t being double charged. Denied & they sent me to collections. Collections had all the info and was able to tell me the details. So infuriating trying to get basic info.

It's been 7 months since we had our baby and we're still receiving unexplained hospital bills in the mail. Hardly ever an adequate description of services. Just a QR code to pay online. It feels intentionally confusing and difficult to get answers. We want price transparency.

@megha_lilly I’ve found that the thought of getting out of the house with little ones was more daunting, but once you are out it is so much easier than being cooped up inside! Endless things to be entertained by and the time flys by

Getting outside time can be a major chore to many mothers of very little children. I get it. The outside world isn’t baby proofed and so you have to be far more vigilant. You have to pack soooo much stuff with you. It might be too hot, or too cold, or rain. It might be too difficult to get someplace that has some nature or child friendly place to hang out especially if you don’t drive or have to think about navigating strollers everywhere. But getting outdoors every day is vital for the wellbeing of both you and your children and there are some tried and true tips and methods that experienced mothers use that make it easier to go outside. 1) get a good baby carrier for the child that doesn’t walk or doesn’t walk well yet 2) have your to go bag packed and ready to go by the door so that you don’t need to pack before you leave 3) don’t pack too many toys, allow your child to be bored outside because that’s how they might just discover their imagination 4) train yourself to be okay with a bit of discomfort for yourself or your baby. 5) don’t be so precious about nap schedules and eating schedules. Fresh air and sunshine are far more important 6) invite a mom friend to meet you there. You’ll get an excuse to socialize with them!

@Cernovich My husbands grandfather was a Deacon and his grandmother a lifelong Catholic (RIP to both) - at the time, their opinion of Francis was less than flattering. The subject has never been off limits.

@homemakinghunny Have you looked for a kitchen aid on marketplace or local thrift store? Only reason being, I got mine in 2012 and it is still going strong. It is such a sturdy, well-made piece of equipment

Ok homemakers/makers of food from scratch people: We are looking into buying either a stand mixer or a good bread maker. I am leaning toward stand mixer because I feel like it’s a lot more versatile. The main goal is to be making our own bread consistently. But I do make a lot of things homemade and I feel like a stand mixer is better for that. But the bread maker takes a lot of the work out of making bread for you so maybe that would be more convenient for the purposes of bread making. But I also can’t make buns or smaller portion bread items with the bread maker. Unfortunately, a KitchenAid is out of the budget, but we’re looking at the Hamilton Beach stand mixer, which seems pretty good as well and comes with dough hooks, whisk attachment, etc. and for the bread mixer, we’re looking at one by Starfrit.

@adamscrabble I was very fond of Scott. I mourned his death. His show was the only one I consistently listened to & during the height of Covid I had to tune out for almost a year. I don’t think to acknowledge this is an attack on him & I agree he would welcome the respectful discussion/debate

I'm cautious to appear as though this is a calculated strike against the memory of Scott Adams (RIP) - I am also certain he would have wanted this to be discussed within reason and congeniality. As an industry, what we saw with Covid, much as we are seeing now with 'iran' 'war' 'oil' 'bill nye' 'strait of hormuz' and so on is fake experts using the opacity of specialized vocabularies It is what Uwe Poerksen, author of Plastic Words (Die Sprache einer internationalen Diktatur” / The language of an international dictatorship - in america changed to The Tyranny of a Modular Language) called the - "Scientization" of the vernacular. - Replicate science by utilizing passive sentences, neutral word choices as props
John Hayes@johnfreehayes

Scott’s revisionist stance in post-Covid always struck me as odd. He would describe his vaccine promotion as a Reddit conspiracy, yet I clearly remember an episode where he presented a specific Pascal’s wager. One side an ordinary influenza and the other side was a weaponized virus intended to harm at a civilizational scale. It was all carefully placed in hypothetical language that he knew would be elided by any inattentive listeners. Redditors took the bait and elevated his message beyond what he literally said. I felt like it was shallow to completely disregard the process of how they got there. In the context of his self-isolation, the Reddit interpretation was probably more true than his stated neutrality.

@Romy_Holland My babies have both loved this & have been happy in their crib/bed from a young age. In the mornings it gave me time to shower or drink my coffee. These days when I go to get my 2yo she tells me “still sleeping” and rolls over so I give her extra time till she’s ready to get out

the thing I feel most guilty about as a mom is that half the time when my baby wakes up from a nap he's pretty content to roll around in his crib babbling to himself and I just leave him there for 10-20 min or until he cries.

If you feel the book is not great, without hesitation, you should stop reading it. If a book should not be a cover to cover thins, it should be word by word thing. This is one reason people find some profound books and re-re-re-re-re read it. Example: i find 1984 a slog, however within it are fascinating ideas, so I have read extensive scholarship on those precise things. I think Animal Farm is a far superior book in that is enjoyable and whimsical and you don't know what it is until 'holy moly' it takes it turn. Many people will say 1984 is a geat book, and i suppose it is when fully explored, which the caual reader will never, ever do (nor should they go down rabbit holes unless prepared for its depths). So 1984 is a great book, but a slog can still be a great book that doesnt need to be read.

Currently reading The Crowd by Gustave Le Bon. Not great yet but always interesting to see how the early thinkers of the 20th century handled ideas. Between him and Bernays — they were definitely starting to think about control through an information matrix (as you describe). Not quite “old” but definitely much earlier than now.

In no way am I defending dentists, I only like a handful of them. However, I always find it interesting that the instinctive belief is on the side of the dentist that says what YOU want to hear! What if there actually was a cavity but the dentist was waiting for it to become a crown or a root canal (significantly more money). How are you judging the accuracy of who was right, and why are you celebrating because you didn't do anything? What if the scammer was the guy who said you had nothing? Maybe he had his daughter's recital and didn't want to be late. How would you know? Funny how your reality starts to break down in front of you with a little reasoning, and we discover the truth of it all: you probably just want to take the moral high ground instead of seek the truth.
Robby Starbuck@robbystarbuck

Always get a 2nd dental opinion. Years ago one told us that one of our kids had multiple cavities that needed fillings ASAP. I told my wife to leave for a second opinion. Next dentist said there were absolutely ZERO cavities. Some of the dentists out there are total scammers.

@OliveSprouts Thank you so much for the suggestion! Truly. I started researching & came across mouth breathing & was surprised as well that it could be a cause - will def look into the therapy! Just kills me that I feel like we have set her up for issues so young. How’s your kiddo fairing now?

@TNvon3 @theNOBSdentist Just my own mom experience & hindsight — but my kiddo who needed multiple crowns at a young age was mouth breathing in her sleep and I didn’t realize that’s a major risk factor for decay. Myofunctional therapy would be my suggestion if that’s something happening for her as well!
