@prestonjbyrne How can they be a quango with the ability to issue fines? Surely that brings them solidly into the "govt office" side of things

@rah_66_comanche Legless requires large specialized infrastructure, which if were talking earth is expensive and if we're talking off planet needs to get there. I could see an ATV vs road vehicle comparison, but I wouldn't call ATVs "very specialized"

@rah_66_comanche I wouldn't say dead but certainly legless has advantages once it is made to work.

@Tank_Archives One would note however that the majority of 6 pdr Vals, the IX included, had no machine gun. Which made them very vulnerable to infantry. A design choice for which even SP AT guns were criticized, on a battle tank.

The first contract for the Valentine IX tank was signed #OTD in 1942. This upgraded tank featured a 6-pounder gun, which made the Valentine viable against contemporary medium and even heavy tanks. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

dad: the gyroscope on this thing was mechanical, so it failed after a couple years me: yeah it's unfortunate that gyroscopes have to be to detect gravitational orientation dad: nah you can do it with lasers, no motion needed me: what dad: yeah look it up me: ...what

@compon For 2-component adhesives (like epoxies). You put a single use mixing nozzle on the end and away you go.

@JimmyThomist Mostly people pretending to not know what words mean and pretending the exclusion zone meant "we won't shoot outside this circle" when it really meant "we'll shoot first and ask questions later inside this circle"

I’ve always been confused as to why the sinking of the Belgrano was controversial. We now know she was planning an Exocet strike on thr British Task Force, but even before that knowledge the controversy seems odd. It was an enemy warship at sea during a war what the British didn’t start. Besides nationalist propaganda and self-hating Brits am I missing something?
FalklandsinUK@FalklandsinUK

On this day in 1982, HMS Conqueror returned to Faslane flying the Jolly Roger to signify a successful operation. The flag featured an atom, crossed torpedoes and an outline of the ARA General Belgrano which she sunk on 2nd May 1982 with the loss of 323 lives. #Falklands44

@the_engi_nerd @random_scrub @HikiPTG There are also MEMS gyros, which while still technically mechanical last basically forever and are much more shock resistant for the most part.

Absolutely must come down like a tonne of bricks on this. Striping infrastructure for scrap metal is fastest way to South Africa/3rd world status. If this becomes normalised your civilisation is over. 2 yrs for repeat offences is no deterrent. Needs to be 5 yrs for 1st offence.
British Transport Police@BTP

Persistent cable thief Iulian Iacob repeatedly stole copper piping from the railway to sell on, passing on costs and delays to the regular commuter. He’s now been jailed for two years. Read more 👉 orlo.uk/sUS97

You CAN build almost anything you want This was out first custom camera and we took it all the way to 2,600m in the Mediterranean. 304 stainless housing, 8mm thick sapphire window, Sony X11 HD block camera w/HDSDI converter. Amazingly, it even worked on the first rev.

There is a reason why Sockeye salmon are called “Reds”. It always astonishes me how bright these fish are when you filet them out.

@Devon_Eriksen_ Minor nitpick, car tires are inflated to pressure above atmospheric, if you put 2 atm (around 30 psi) in your tires, which is normal, it's 3 atm compared to a vacuum. A flat tire is measured at 0 atm/psi relative.

I studied this very carefully when I started writing science fiction, because it quickly become relevant. A spacecraft is not a submarine, which is designed to hold out many, many atmospheres of pressure differential. A spacecraft is designed to hold in one. For comparison purposes, the pressure differential in your Honda Civic's tires is about 2.5 atmospheres. 1.0 would be a flat tire. So, no, a small breech will not suck you out into space. Nor will it instantly evacuate your vessel. Just walk up and slap a patch on it.
Scott Manley@DJSnM

@SciGuySpace I found a photo of one of the repair operations, they literally drill a hole through the pressure hull to stop the crack propagating and then immediately seal it with epoxy.
