The pertinent point is that we pay too much tax generally, too much tax on fuel specifically, with too many people paying no (income) tax at all, and that the Irish govt is addicted to perpetual increases in wasteful spending.

@tjmcgibnxy @DavidMarra @Tomcastlehume At no point in the tax system is the maginal rate 51%. For someone on 50k it is slightly more than 47%. For someone on 70k it is slightly more than 52% so it depends on your salary. The total tax take is significantly less for most.

@Tomcastlehume Really? €100 gross pay less 51% = €49 in my pocket. Spend that €49 on fuel which is ca 65% tax and I’m left with €17.15 for the actual fuel. The other €82.85 is PRSI, USC, VAT, CO2 and excise. Unless your maths worth differently, of course.

@TPMC67 @culladgh Ill give you one so. If you have an expensive sports car, the road tax will be high. If you get the hybrid version instead, way cheaper. Common practice.

@culladgh He's in a higher tax bracket. But they all use loopholes to avoid paying taxes where possible.
