Most history enthusiasts know Robert E. Lee graduated second in his West Point class with the second-highest score ever recorded. But the third-highest graduating score in Academy history belongs to another military legend: Douglas MacArthur. In the Class of 1903, MacArthur finished first in his class and posted one of the greatest academic performances West Point has ever seen — behind only Charles Mason and Lee himself. He went on to become one of America’s most famous generals: WWI hero, Superintendent of West Point (where he pushed “Every cadet an athlete”), Supreme Commander in the Pacific during WWII, and the architect of the daring Inchon landing in Korea. Only two men in West Point history ever posted a higher graduating score than Douglas MacArthur: Charles Mason and Robert E. Lee.
