@gwenshap It's natural to feel some frustration over a problem that you've invested enough in to feel ownership over if someone figures it out before you. But, yes. How quickly someone transitions from that feeling to thankfulness/curiosity indicates a lot about their emotional health

You can learn a lot about an engineer by noticing how they react when someone else solves a problem that they were stuck on for a while.

@Shoestring_Lab @davepl1968 Kinda like male body builders. Few people outside their own group find them attractive (but, hey, no shame for those who do; enjoy what you enjoy if it doesn't hurt others)

@davepl1968 The Kardashian look was always about women one upping each other, it was never about being attractive to men.

In a meeting to introduce/introduce ourselves to a new software manager. My favorite introduction from a dev so far is “I do software”

Ok, ok. It’s shameless advertising and I’m sorry. I’m an engineer and love building stuff and not selling it. This issue came up for our family and so, like an engineer, I overbuilt a solution to the problem and am a small hosting company I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

@cybersecmeg I’m a dev but I feel the burn out culture and free time studying points. I’ve got a family and can’t spend that free time on my career (or, not completely). I have experienced employers where this isn’t the case but, at my current employer, it definitely feels that way

things that bother me about working in cybersecurity (in no specific order): - glorified burn out culture - the toxic mindset of “if you’re not spending your free time studying up on cyber, you aren’t working hard enough” - the toxic mindset of “i had to spend 5 years working on help desk and 3 years as a sys admin before landing my first cyber role, so you should have it this hard too” - the gatekeeping - the weird belief that GRC isn’t as important as red or blue teaming - the insecure men who feel threatened when a female is more successful than them ick

You can hustle for the things important to you. But please take time to make sure you’re not running yourself ragged

For the #developers / software engineers / #infosec out there hustling please take a moment to breathe and check in with your mental health. I struggle with #anxiety enough to take meds. It takes time and emotional energy every day to give myself grace necessary to do a good job

I just presented my findings to my boss from the penetration test I performed on a client and he provided actionable feedback on how we can add more value. He suggested I do more manual testing on some API endpoints so I’ll definitely get to it. But overall wow, I’m happy

@TheBenzend @catalinmpit 💯… I’m playing with some LLMs at home in between my day job (which I can’t share about beyond what they post publicly) and my son’s baseball games. I’d love to have the financial security to be able to post rad stuff. In time I suppose but for now I’ll take stability and family

@catalinmpit Yeah- it’s rough when it’s hard to share cool stuff like this when you work for a company. Also 90% of the time I’m super heads down on work and there’s only 2 engineers on the team; me being one of them.

You can't tell me to ship if: - your app has less users than mine - or you have less commits than me - or you make less money than me You can't argue with me about AI capabilities if: - you aren't a dev or never worked as a dev - or you never built anything more than a simple landing page - or you never deployed your AI app publicly - or your AI app has less than 5-10 active users Thanks.

In my original code I separated concerns into their own classes for maintainability and readability. That is good for a big project. But this isn't a big project. It's a small tool for a simple job and simplicity in the code likely wins here.

I've got the code generated by the LLM for updating Cloudflare DNS records in C++ to the point where CMake will create a Makefile and I can start fixing what the LLM generated. The code isn't good but it is much simpler than what I wrote manually github.com/taylor-built-s…

@davepl1968 @DeeLaSheeArt I’ve tried to live my life by the idea of “Strong opinions, weakly held” or, in other words, “do the best you know how until you know better. Then do better.”

I appreciate you.@DeeLaSheeArt·
I honestly hate that we’ve normalized the idea that all opinions are valid. I think we should get back to telling ppl that they are ill informed & ignorant

Also, don’t be a jerk about not giving full expectations if you’re in a situation where you need to give full expectation

You cannot expect others to understand what you mean if you don’t tell them. You can learn a lot about what they know and assume by not giving a complete set of expectations. But they won’t meet your expectations. They may even highlight expectations you didn’t know you had.
