On February 5, I had the pleasure of visiting FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics, Inc (FCDI) (@CellDynamics) in Madison, Wisconsin, where I was warmly welcomed by CEO Tomoyuki Hasegawa, along with Peter Fuhrken (VP, Technical Operations) and Sho Sato (R&D Manager). I was joined by Tom Still (@TStillWTC), past President of the Wisconsin Technology Councill (@WiscTechCouncil) and owner & writer of Inside Wisconsin, and Andrew Seaborg, Honorary Consul in Madison, Wisconsin. We received a briefing and tour of the facility, which serves as a core pillar of FUJIFILM's life sciences business. Founded in 1934, the FUJIFILM Group now operates in 169 countries, with 270 group companies, more than 72,000 employees, and $21.1B in global revenue. Healthcare is a core component-representing nearly 33% of FY2024 revenue, with a goal of 50% by 2030. FUJIFILM's Partners for Life vision is compelling, offering end-to-end "one-stop value" across the pharmaceutical lifecycle-from early drug discovery to commercial manufacturing-while strengthening CDMO capabilities in cell & gene therapy, vaccines, and biologics. At the heart of FCDI's work is its iPSC platform, which generates iPS cells and differentiates them into a wide range of human cell types for use in disease modeling, toxicology, drug discovery, and more. Today, FCDI supplies more than 40 cell types to over 400 companies worldwide. Beyond research, FCDI is advancing iPSC-derived cell therapies in oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, and regenerative medicine. The company continues to grow its footprint in Wisconsin, including a $100M+ investment in a new headquarters and development center in Madison. Having visited FCDI firsthand, I left with strong expectations for the future of their work-and real optimism about the impact they will continue to make in advancing medicine.
