@TheGolfDivoTee Incredible season & an incredible player. Unfortunately for his Scottish fans he never returned adding to the mystique surrounding him.
Was disappointed in 2023 that the R&A, USGA and ANGC didn’t make more recognition of the 70th anniversary. Perhaps they will in 2028 for 75th.

Sorry to keep banging on about it but Ben Hogan's 1953 season was nothing short of truly astonishing -
Just 3 years after his head-on collision with a Greyhound bus when he suffered life-threatening injuries and told he would never walk again let alone play golf he played in 6 tournaments and won 5 of them.
These included the Masters by 5 strokes, the U.S. Open by 6 strokes and the Open Championship by 4 strokes.
The Open at Carnoustie was an incredible standout achievement because he'd never played any links golf beforehand, spent 2 weeks getting used to the smaller 1.62 British golf, had to play 36 holes of qualifying in very unpredicable and cold weather, avoid 112 strategically placed pot bunkers over rugged burnt-out fairways and then putt on much slower, undulating greens.
I rest my case!

@DPWorldTour Makes it easier 2 do when 90% of pts won 2 achieve this are from co-sanctioned events that DP tour based players like Penge didnt have access 2.
Morikawa almost won it a few years ago having not set foot in continental Europe.
Should b a separate list for regular DP events.
English

@GuillemBalague Disagree.
WC shud b elite not a participation festival. This dilutes&devalues comp.
More group games will b mismatches.
Re. SCO. Yes DEN & GRE wudnt hav been in pots 1&2 under old system so we prob wudv had tougher group but we may hav qualified thru that too. Luck of the draw.

The joy sparked by Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup is a perfect illustration of why expanding the tournament is good for football, not bad. Make it a World Cup of 100 nations!!
Their celebration shows that, for me anyway, the World Cup is not just about the favourites or the powerhouses, it’s about the entire footballing community feeling represented on the biggest stage.
For smaller or less frequent participants, reaching the World Cup is almost like winning a trophy in itself. It was wonderful to see the explosion of pride, positive national unity, football joy from all quarters, no matter what age, race, sexuality. That is precisely what keeps the sport alive. And by the way, we don’t have enough of that. Why limit that experience to a handful of countries?
Every new team adds a fresh story, a unique style, a different cultural expression of the game. Fans love underdog narratives, just think of Iceland or Morocco. Or Uzbekistan, Cape Verde.
When more teams qualify, more federations invest, more young players dream, more governments offer support. I am convinced broader participation lifts the global level, not lowers it.
On top of that, if the World Cup is truly global, the door shouldn’t be half-closed. Scotland’s celebrations are a reminder: nations with long histories, passionate fans, rich traditions deserve more opportunities to be part of the world’s biggest sporting event.
The tournament isn’t, or shouldn’t be, only about who wins it, or should not be limited to a Euro-centric vision of football. For me it’s about what it means emotionally to millions. The more nations involved, the more of those moments we get.

@Daniel_Rapaport …and Americans have won 74 of the 120 majors in that timeframe.
What about it? 🤷🏻♂️🤦♂️
English

@AlanShipnuck @DanOnGolfShow What on earth are u talking about?
US haplessness.
Statistically US team have been better team T2G, APP & AG.
It was only 2 editions ago in 2021 there were concerns this was the start of a generational dynasty of American players that wud last a decade. These things are cyclical.
English

Made this point last night on @DanOnGolfShow: At what point do we start worrying about the relevancy of the Ryder Cup? Haven't had a suspenseful one since 2012. Europe is on the way to winning for the 11th time in the last 15 Cups. The U.S. haplessness has become tedious.
English

@jamierkennedy @RyderCupUSA There shud b a presidents cup comp in women’s golf considering the real powerhouse team in women’s game would be the internationals.
But in men’s game there is no emergency. We expected an American generational dynasty after 2021 that didn’t happen. Things change quickly.
English

@acaseofthegolf1 Potentially the closer ‘bond’ the Europeans have is because they all live & work in America away from their home nations and collectively support each other. Doubtful it’s ’continental pride’ as they very rarely play in Europe which would greatly support the tour but they don’t.
English

I said this on the podcast.
Yes analytics are important
Yes, shots gained, shots lost, are important.
Yes, what kind of ball and ball flight are important.
But the Europeans biggest advantage in my opinion is most of them are genuine friends.
Remember the Molinari and Fleetwood pic in bed. Rory and Shane played the Zurich, sang karaoke after they waxed the field.
Think about Rory saying at the press conference two years ago when he predicted that would win this year, go back and watch the rest of the team’s reaction. They all immediately loved it.
They do social media together (anger management as an example with the Euro Tour) they hang out together.
When shit gets sideways it’s so valuable to have a friend, a genuine friend by your side, instead of someone you don’t know that well.
Not saying the Americans don’t have a few good friends or they don’t like each other, not at all, just saying the Europeans are much closer and I don’t think there is much debate about that.
And I think it’s a huge factor.
English

@jamierkennedy Incredible competition that’s even more historic than the Ryder cup. Something the smallest number of golfers will ever experience and connects them forever.
Was fortunate enough to go to last edition at st. Andrews to see the next generation.
It was beneath @ShaneLowryGolf thou
English

A rite of passage.
The @WalkerCup has seen some of the best golfers in history competing as amateurs for the US or GB&I.
Here's a thread of their debut photos 🧵

@Mr_JDAW @RobertCarson88 @matsimpson89 @SkySportsGolf If All or none. Id go with 12 picks it removes objectivity and the fallacy that the rankings actually mean anything and the double standard on both teams that some players 7-12 played their way onto the team and for some reason others didn’t.
Makes it purely subjective.
English

@TW82_15 @RobertCarson88 @matsimpson89 @SkySportsGolf Yeah what a great idea. Can't believe they haven't tried that. How many captain picks do you think there should be?
English

@Kw2309Jc @SkySportsGolf True but naive.
I think it’s clear why if he’s not picked and it’s not form or character or ability.
Who drops out for him?
Similarly I think rasmus is borderline if he didn’t sneak into top 6.
Might have been a straight fight between the 2 for final pick.
English

@TW82_15 @SkySportsGolf Who says he finishes 7th, wins omega and doesn't get picked?
That's purely an assumption.
English

@Kw2309Jc @SkySportsGolf No. Irrelevant to the point I was making. There’s no scenario that Donald couldn’t make up a reason for not picking him if he’s outside top 6. He could have finished 7th on list and won omega and he still wouldn’t be picked.
I’m not saying he should be. Donald has ‘his guys’.
English

@TW82_15 @SkySportsGolf 😂😂😂😂😂 what a ludicrous statement.
When Pep chooses his team and implements tactics he doesn't know the outcome... So is he shit then?
English

@LouStagner @TheMeatloaf03 How many times are you going to set that bait for someone? 😂
English

@RobertCarson88 @matsimpson89 @SkySportsGolf Yep would be interesting. I’m not against that idea.
End of day a winning captain is a genius and a losing one is an idiot.
Donald could easily apply all same strategies and methods that were lauded in 2023 and be the idiot in a month.
English

@Mr_JDAW @RobertCarson88 @matsimpson89 @SkySportsGolf Fair enough. I’m not necessarily advocating for Wallace to be picked. I’m simply saying after the 6 players forced on Donald the rankings are irrelevant and the captain will pick ‘his guys’ regardless.
English

@TW82_15 @RobertCarson88 @matsimpson89 @SkySportsGolf I personally don't think Wallace has done enough. And 2 years ago I thought Aberg had
English

@Mark_G_Scott @mb018538 @SkySportsGolf I’ve never suggested Donald doesn’t hav the right to choose. Of course he does. But don’t b naive enuf to think that his picks in principle weren’t made months ago.
Rankings are irrelevant other than the 6 forced upon him.
Do u really think Rasmus wud b a definite captains pick?
English

@TW82_15 @mb018538 @SkySportsGolf The idea that LD doesn’t have the right, as RC Captain, to choose who he thinks should be in the team is manifestly absurd. It’s not spinning ensuing but rather just making his choice.
