Great job as always on the pod. I agree that there are legitimate challenges with the fall/winter sport overlap, but those challenges have been managed for as long as I can remember and that’s simply part of being a multi-sport athlete. It’s also worth noting that TAPPS has always been easier to navigate in this regard than UIL, which plays much deeper into December. Where I struggle is with the loss of meaningful experiences, such as practicing and playing during Thanksgiving week and competing in December for a state championship. Those milestones matter to certain programs and represent what a strong season looks like. Respectfully, I understand this may be hard to fully relate to if you haven’t experienced it firsthand as a player or coach at Grace or SCS (yes, I checked!). It’s just different, and it’s something that’s hard to explain if you haven’t lived it. I’m also not a fan of splitting Division II into small and large school brackets. TAPPS is already limited in terms of the number of competing programs, and dividing it further during playoffs makes the “small school championship” feel more like a participation trophy. Personally, I’d rather compete against all of your peers and risk an early exit than win a watered-down title. Finally, if the primary goal was to prevent “season overlap,” then why wasn’t anything done to address the more significant overlap between winter and spring sports? I could accept the overlap narrative if the winter season had also been adjusted to better support spring sports, but that’s not the case giving me the sense that this was all done behind the scenes by some basketball loving coaches/ADs.
