Paul Was Not a Religious Innovator, He Was a Chosen Vessel Key Passage: Acts 9:15 — “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel.” Introduction One of the slickest tricks ever pulled on Bible students is the attempt to turn the Apostle Paul into a religious inventor, a first-century theologian sitting in a corner somewhere with a stack of Jewish traditions, Greek categories, Roman citizenship papers, and personal genius, supposedly “developing” Christianity into something Jesus never intended. That is the language of unbelieving scholarship. That is the language of men who can dissect a verse and miss the voice of God in it. The King James Bible does not present Paul as a religious philosopher who reshaped Judaism into Christianity. It presents him as a blaspheming, persecuting, religious zealot who was stopped cold by the risen Lord Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus, knocked into the dust, blinded by heavenly glory, and converted by direct revelation. Acts 9 is not the story of a man having a religious idea. It is the story of God arresting His enemy and turning him into His vessel. The key passage is not subtle. Acts 9:15 says, “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me.” Those words settle the issue for anyone who believes the Bible. Paul did not choose himself for this office. Jerusalem did not choose him. Peter did not ordain him into apostleship. A council did not vote him in. A seminary did not certify him. The risen Christ chose him. The Lord told Ananias exactly what Paul was: “a chosen vessel.” A vessel does not invent the treasure it carries. A vessel does not author the message it bears. A vessel is chosen, filled, carried, used, and sometimes broken in the hand of the Master. Paul was not the source of the gospel; he was the appointed carrier of a revelation given by Jesus Christ. That is why Galatians 1:11-12 says, “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” This matters because if Paul invented his message, then half your New Testament is negotiable. If Paul merely reshaped Judaism, then Romans becomes religious commentary, Galatians becomes a social argument, Ephesians becomes a community vision, and the mystery of the Body of Christ becomes nothing more than Jewish-Gentile sociology with Christian vocabulary sprinkled over it. But if Paul is what the Bible says he is, then his epistles carry apostolic authority for the Church Age. If Paul was the chosen vessel of the risen Christ, then his doctrine of justification by faith, the Body of Christ, the mystery, the rapture, the judgment seat of Christ, Christian liberty, and salvation by grace through faith apart from works is not an optional Pauline “angle.” It is God’s doctrine for this dispensation. The attack on Paul is never just an academic issue. It is an attack on the clarity of Church Age truth. Chapter 1: Paul’s Religion Did Not Save Him; It Made Him an Enemy of Christ Before Paul was saved, he was not a pagan drunkard crawling out of an alley. He was not a careless Gentile idolater bowing before Diana or Jupiter. He was a religious man, a Bible-reading man, a law-keeping man, a tradition-trained man, a separated Pharisee, and a zealous defender of what he thought was truth. In Philippians 3:4-6, Paul gives his religious résumé: “circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.” That is not the testimony of a man who lacked religion.
