10 things I wish someone told me in my first year of coaching. Most coaches learn these the hard way. Which one do you wish someone told you sooner? 1. The coach you are on your worst day is the coach your players actually remember. 2. You will care more about winning than your players do. That’s your first hurdle. 3. Your players know when you’re coaching for them and when you’re coaching for yourself. 4. Relationships come before results. 5. Every decision you make daily is either building your culture or breaking it. 6. The captain you pick tells your team exactly what you value. Choose wrong and you’ve already lost them. 7. The bench players decide if your culture is real or just a poster on the wall. 8. How you handle being wrong in front of your team will define your credibility more than anything you do right. 9. The player who challenges you the most will teach you the most. 10. The parent you ignore in year one becomes your biggest problem in year three. 11. The veteran coach down the hall knows things that will save you years of pain. Ask them. 12. Your life outside coaching will suffer if you let it. Protect it early. The sooner you learn these, the better coach you become. 🏆

The “boring” stuff wins ballgames: -Backing up the play -Putting the ball in play -Moving the runner -Making the routine plays -Consistent communication -Throwing strikes -Smart baserunning -Taking your walks -Getting HBP, holding your ground -Hitting a cutoff man -Hustling out everything *At some point, the “boring” tasks of ⚾️ will win extra games! And more often than not, playoff berths, seedings, playoff wins, and even championships can be determined and decided by what many would call “boring.” Turn the “boring” into the “important” and that’s how you win! #BaseballTruth

A bad attitude is a choice. Hard circumstances aren't always in your control. How you respond to them always is. I've been in situations where a bad attitude would have been completely understandable and I've learned that it never makes the situation better. It only makes it harder for the people around you. Choose differently today.

Players You will be very disappointed in the people that are giving you the following advice, unless you're a can't miss future MLB player. Don't bench press. Don't lift heavy weights. Don't long toss over X, Y, Z feet. Don't play summer baseball. Go to showcases instead. Don't play fall baseball. Don't play summer ball the summer before going to college. That you need an advisor. Training replaces competitive games. You need to play less and focus on showcases and training. All garbage advice. You do need to play as many competitive games as possible. You do need to be addicted to the weight room. You do need to be addicted to conditioning. You do need to be addicted to caloric intake. You do need to be addicted to skill work. You do need to be addicted to outworking the competition.

✅ Just because you're a FROSH doesn't mean you can't be a leader. ✅ Just because you're a SOPH doesn't mean you learned it all last year. ✅ Just because you're a JR doesn't mean you get to be on varsity. ✅ Just because you're a SR doesn't mean you get to start.

High School Playoffs. Winning a high school state championship is special. The players go to school with each other, in most cases for years, parents know each other, and it means something to the community. High school athletics bring people together and form a bond forever. High school athletics can't be replaced.

PLAYERS: If your coach holds you accountable in the little things be grateful because that can set you up to achieve the big things you desire most.

You will never see a great team where coaches or team leaders are soft on teammates who are just going through the motions.

HS Baseball Players ⚾️ You WILL go 0-3 You WILL make errors You WILL have bad outings Other teams WILL talk crap That’s baseball. It’s built to expose you, and it's built on failure. Don’t get emotional… get better. Because your RESPONSE is louder than anything they say 💯

Your best player is either raising your standard or lowering it. There is no middle. Leadership matters.

Players: How do you approach your ROLE? - Do you complain about it? - Do you accept it? - Do you star in it? Great teams aren’t built on equal roles. They’re built on equal commitment. Be great at what you’re good at.

You don’t have to be the best player to make a great contribution to a team. The best teams have players who embrace team-first roles

I’ve sat in recruiting meetings where a coach pulled a kid OFF the board Not because of his film. His film was great. Because another coach visited his school and heard from a teacher that the kid was disrespectful in class One conversation. One teacher. Done. Your character evaluation is happening whether you know it or not
