The #Panthers do not have “much work ahead.” One move that can free $12.3M for the team in 2026 is a restructure of Jaycee Horn. On top of that… Damien Lewis and Mike Jackson would create another $12.2m this year if (once) extended. Simple stuff. This would put the Panthers in solid position for their upcoming draft class and 2nd wave FA while ranking them 11th in the NFL for available cap space.
SleeperPanthers@SleeperCarolina

The #Panthers have ~$20 million in dead money, 20th in the NFL. They also only have ~$5 million in top 51 cap space, 29th in the league. Restructures will definitely be needed before the draft. Free agency was fun but there is still much work ahead. (Numbers via @spotrac)

Panthers are re-signing returning starting S Nick Scott on a 1-year deal worth up to $3.25 million, per agents Jeremy Appledorf (@J_App10) and Ed Wasielewski (@ed_waz) of EMG Sports. Scott was 2nd on Panthers last yr w/ career-high 111 tackles and is a leader on Ejiro Evero’s D.

Something that’ll likely get lost in the Rico Dowdle conjecture and the Devin Lloyd-Jaelan Phillips headlines for the #Panthers is that Dan Morgan and Brandt Tilis have done the following with the use of one-year deals: - Retained all four of their restricted-eligible FAs on deals substantially less than the lowest restricted tender - Retained JJ Jansen, Akayleb Evans, Trevis Gipson, Robert Rochell and David Moore on near-vet minimum deals (but with additional perks for most). - They signed a starting-caliber LT on an incentive-laden deal that won’t hinder them in 2027 if it doesn’t work out. Plus, they don’t need force an OT pick in April. - They’ve been able to do all this while simply cutting one player and restructuring another (more likely to come but not necessarily dire) - The bulk of the signings being 1-year deals makes the inherent risk quite low - They only lost three players from last year’s division-winning team thus far: Mays, Dowdle and Robinson (released). D’Anthony Bell was waived during the playoffs. - They’ve done this all while staying “whole” with seven picks in the draft.

Still plenty of options out there that will likely wait until after the draft to find their new team. I think our plan is to see how the draft falls and if we don't find an OT that we are confident in for day 1, then we use the second wave of FA to fill the hole. I am saying this on day 1 of FA - so anything can still happen between now and the draft.

Pretty excited about the premier adds. I believe Fortner is a good add as well. It is nice to see how our roster is starting to gain depth finally. I am looking forward to the 2nd wave of FA after the draft. 53 man cut down is going to be big too. Heading into the draft we have shrunk our positional needs. This allows the FO to take a shot at BPA without sacrificing the roster in the process.

@wc41714 NFL and media rights deals are going to be renogotiated meaning the cap could shoot up by 20-30%. Which means that player's agent are going to be asking for way money. So it's best to get out in front of it.

DB95’s contract will likely be revisited before the media rights opt out in 2029-2030. #Panthers created 27m in cap with two moves in as many days. Likely 1 or 2 more moves coming.
Spotrac@spotrac

The #Panthers converted $16.9M of DL Derrick Brown's salary into signing bonus, adding 2 void years, clearing $13.5M of cap space in 2026. Updated Cap Hits 2026: $10.9M 2027: $31.3M 2028: $32.3M 2029: $6.6M (void)

Extensions for Mike Jack and Damien Lewis would make sense. It frees up money now, and gives them a well deserve reward. As for Moton and Wharton - those are likely our last on the list contracts that we want to touch. With Wharton's let down of a first year with us, we won't want to touch his contract since we can move on from it next year (with savings) if we choose to. If we restructure, we take away that option. As for Moton, any restructures to his deal will add dead cap for multiple years after he is gone. Horn and Hunt and the likely options pending on how the FO sees them for the future. Moton is possible, but its just not ideal.

@NTardzer If they don’t need to, then they won’t. No reason to restructure just to restructure. We have so much cap space in 2027 and any restructure eats into that.
