@B1OBEY0ND I hate to break it to you. Terry Smith may be a PSU alum and a local figure from Gateway HS, but he was virtually unknown outside Pennsylvania until he was named interim. I have no opinion about Smith one way or the other.

@B1OBEY0ND Bob knew Franklin was not a great coach ten years ago or more. But he’s a good recruiter, so if he elevates the talent level back to what VT should have, then moves on in four or five years, so be it. Terry Smith is irrelevant.

@JWMediaDC By the way, the Big East formed in 1979, Pitt joined in 1982 and PSU was excluded. The Big East sponsored football in 1991 when Miami joined to keep Pitt, Cuse and BC from leaving. The eastern league was discussed in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

By the way WVU also joined at that time 1991. WVU became a full member in 1994. So if PSU wanted a Eastern league had it.

@B1OBEY0ND Too many Penn State fans are angry that Franklin didn’t give them a championship but don’t understand how the world and PSU’s place in it has changed since 1986. PSU’s peers are not Ohio State, Michigan and USC. They are Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa.

We have money, big brand, play in the best conference, huge fanbase, big stadium, a lot of support, tradition, Draft picks

Many of us said for years that James Franklin wasn’t a great head coach, and now it’s becoming well known. He was successful because at Penn State because he got a lot of great talent because it’s Penn State and he’s a great schmoozer.

@JRinfrette @ChrisDokish How does PSU recruit itself? It’s a second tier program in the middle of nowhere in a state whose working class population crashed 30-40 years ago. It’s not 1986 anymore. The kids getting paid to play these days don’t even remember seeing JoePa coach.

@ChrisDokish I think what has become apparent is that Franklin assembled a bad staff at the end of his run at PSU. And Terry Smith’s judgment and media savvy looks worse and worse every time he speaks publicly. No one anywhere ever thought Franklin was a great coach, including VT fans.

@WhiteOutFB Excuses for what? Allar is terrible and he probably wasn’t well coached. Tell VT fans something we don’t know already. Assuming we care. Most don’t, unless they are a Steelers fan like me. So you know, no one confuses Franklin with Frank in Blacksburg.

@B1OBEY0ND He’s said a ton of positive things about PSU since he left. Too many for my liking, to be honest. Look, PSU fired the guy at midseason the year after Allar literally threw away a chance to play for the championship. And you expect him to say everything there was perfect? LOL

@JWMediaDC No, the Big East never invited PSU. You are dead wrong on that point. And the Big East football schools came to regret it. Eastern football died because Pitt, Syracuse and Boston College chose basketball over football and because the small Catholic schools didn’t want PSU.

Actually the Big East invited Pitt and PSU. The Panthers excepted and PSU went to the Big Ten. JoPa never wanted Lions hoops to overshadow the football team
