I know this is engagement bait but when I lived in SF proper I could see coyotes at night and a cougar would occasionally get lost in the city after somehow crossing golden gate/bay bridge
And in Texas there were alligators in my backyard

Not a bad idea. Some liberties are taken, of course, but Syndicate was well-researched and it's a good starting off point. Plus it gives the students something tangible to look at instead of just reading about it.
