Nigeria ranks among the lowest in the world for women’s political representation at less than 5%.
The Reserved Seats Bill could change that by ensuring women have guaranteed representation in parliament.
But can legislation alone shift deeply rooted power structures?
Join our distinguished panelists — @akinalabi, @osasuigbinedion, @Talk2Adaora — as we debate what inclusion truly means for Nigeria’s democracy.

TheCable@thecableng
Despite making up nearly half of Nigeria’s population, women occupy less than 5% of elective seats across the country. The Reserved Seats for Women Bill seeks to change that by guaranteeing a minimum number of seats for women in the national and state assemblies. But is Nigeria ready for such a shift? Will it empower women or entrench tokenism? Join our panelists @akinalabi, @osasuigbinedion and @Talk2Adaora unpack the politics, promise, and pushback around gender representation. x.com/i/spaces/1dxxy…

Citizens Plenary is two-hour televised citizen plenary on women representation and constitutional development , This Town-hall broadcast live on Africa Independent Television (AIT) and is initiated by Anti-Sexual Violence Lead (ASVIOL) Support Initiative, in partnership with Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC), Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Amnesty International, was segmented into two important panels.
The First panel addressed Women’s Political Participation in Nigeria, examining the current landscape, barriers to participation, and strategies to enhance women’s roles in the political sphere. The Second panel delved into Women’s Constitutional Development, discussing the strides and challenges in integrating women’s rights and interests into the constitutional framework.
These panels not only provided a forum for dialogue but also showcased the ongoing efforts and the collaborative approach required to achieve gender parity in Nigeria’s political landscape. The discussions highlighted the need for continuous advocacy, legal reforms, and educational initiatives to empower women and ensure their voices are heard in the constitutional development and political arenas of Nigeria. On this week's episode of our women weekly dose, we'll be discussing the rising trend of domestic violence against women and girls in Nigeria as a deeply concerning issue. Despite efforts to address gender-based violence, cases continue to escalate, highlighting the urgent need for more robust legal frameworks, awareness campaigns, and support systems for survivors. Cultural norms and systemic inequalities often exacerbate the problem, leaving many women and girls vulnerable and without recourse. Addressing this trend requires a coordinated effort from government agencies, civil society, and communities to create a safer and more equitable environment for all. #EndDomesticViolence #StopAbuseNigeria #ProtectNigerianWomen #BreakTheSilenceNG Join the discussion tomorrow on twitter using the link below x.com/i/spaces/1jMKg… PLATFORM : TWITTER DATE : THURSDAY 18TH JULY 2024 TIME : 6PM HANDLE : @Genderstrategy

community radio also thrives on listener engagement. listeners are not passive consumers of news but also active participants of the process. they become the off-air advocates for the change thereby sustaining the demand of accountability. this helps to further create the collaborations with other mediums as citizens demand and interest on particular findings expand.2

@WSoyinkaCentre the significance of radio cannot be underrated, they are the closet medium to the people. well done @WSoyinkaCentre for this conversation.
