🚨NEW STUDY DROP🚨 Columbian Mammoths are found throughout North America. New study looks at isotopes, carbon, and toothwear in Mexican Columbian Mammoths to understand what type of things they were eating. They find they were more flexible than thought. 🎨: Shu-yu Hsu

Holy crap! Despite it being popularly known, and the namesake of a major group of dinosaurs, Ankylosaurus itself is known from only limited material. This looks to be a spectacular specimen.
EDGE Central@NatSciChannel

Clayton Phipps and co have discovered what is likely a nearly complete Ankylosaurus in Hell Creek sediments. This is ironically probably the rarest thing he has ever worked on - Ankylosaurus is known from like 1 good specimen and 3 or 4 total. Look at how pristine that skull is!

Reanalysis of 250-million-year-old fossils, lost for 50 years, has revealed an ocean-crossing predator. This attacker had a crocodile-like head, a body like a salamander, and pointy teeth. This analysis identified another species of marine amphibian too spr.ly/6019B6XS4J

Morbid to think that at 70,000 years ago, Homo sapiens were an endangered species. And that if the last ice age was slightly worse, we could have easily gone extinct with all the other hominins. Showing that intelligent species aren’t the “end goal” to evolution, no species is…

The “Swamp King” from #TheDinosaurs segment stays with me, possibly due to the haunting Dilophosaurus sound or my growing genderqueerness. Whenever I think of being myself, I remember his beautiful song.

Deer are simple..? No? As a cetologist there really is no reason to tear down one species over another. I do understand your meaning, but, just because an animal doesn't appear to show human-like cognition (whatever that may mean) doesn't mean they aren't complex.
The Marvelous Mx. Hazel!@TangentTanager

White-tailed Deer and Humpback Whales are as closely related as we are to capuchins. While some simians share similar cognition, deer and whales followed very different evolutionary paths. Deer are simple, whales are complex.

@Brand0nsm181274 I always assumed that the Primal tyrannosaurids were sexually dimorphic with crests being in the drakes and the whole coloration being just colored morphs as seen in Eastern Screech Owls.

The red tyrannosaurus species has outcompeted the blue species Like how gray squirrels are outcompeting red squirrels today Makes me wonder what the blue species was doing “wrong” to not thrive as much as the red ones “my guess is size because every red one we see is bigger”

We may never know for sure, but Fang's species being almost extinct could very well still be true. After her original offspring are killed, we never see another T. rex that looks exactly like her again. Red looks completely different, Spike and Sonja are hybrids.

@anthro_andrew I know! I have to say I am so happy so many people really like deer too. Deer often get a bad rap on being lost in the headlights, but deer are graceful and ethereal. I love them too

As someone that loves deer, I seem to upset people on Twitter calling them “simple” when discussing artiodactyl cognition. My apologies as poor wording, when trying to explain a deer’s way of living is different from whales.

Add to that Vietnam's elephant population with US pilots instructed to target elephants because they were used them for logistics and the eco-warfare of Agent Orange. The Vietnam War resulted in the Vietnamese elephant population shrinking from thousands to hundreds. Now >100.

Never will forgive colonialism for absolutely eradicating most of the Javan rhinoceros population. To the extent that they can only be found in one national park :(

@Shadoo_creeture @Maya_Moo13 So while Asian linsangs are the closest living relatives to cats, they are considered their own family of feliforms (although when they were first described, they were initially thought to be members of the cat family due to some shared features).

Astonishingly, a small deer-like mammal has developed one of the most complex brains in 54 million years. Its descendants might possess higher emotional capacities beyond our understanding. I am talking about cetaceans.
