Always working to engage more of the public in scientific research. To that end, we have deployed this soundproof booth in a hospital clinic waiting room where patients can participate in our language research while waiting for their appointment! #sciComm tkoomar.github.io/project/langua…

In our new #GenLang preprint by Else Eising et al, we use genomics to investigate reading- & language-related skills in up to 34,000 people, directly assessed via psychometric testing. Years-long initiative uniting efforts of many dedicated colleagues: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/n

One of my favorite features of the iPhone is how the screenshot function has turned my camera roll into a record of every time I snooze my alarm...

These are the films that have the potential to influence how people view women in a positive way (i.e. as full human beings), but they are still abysmal at doing so IMHO. The 80’s were just particularly rough.

This #TidyTuesday: an information-dense look at representation of women in film (via the Bechdel test). The 1980’s were a particularly bad time for female representation in the top grossing films (which make up a huge portion of the USA box office). #Rstats

@EdIvimeyCook @rstatstweet Personally I think it really depends on the data: Normal = boxplot is fine. Anything else = violin with the median. Dozens or fewer points = put them on top. Hundreds or more points = too cluttered, leave them off.

@dungeonsanddads I simply can’t wait to find out the verdict! Thinking this would be a real “page turner” as a novel full of flashbacks from different characters’ perspectives. I just couldn’t think of a good fantasy pun name for John Grisham... any thoughts?

@rjstorybreak got another poster coming in hot. Figured a 70’s feel and reference to Jaws was appropriate given the inspiration.

@rjstorybreak Thanks! As soon at I image searched “flea” this sick electron microscopy pic was at the top of the results and I immediately saw a tiny little rocket ship flying into its jaws (or maybe mandibles!?)

@rjstorybreak I just spent a month listening to the pod's back catalogue (exactly 150 episodes in 30 days, that's how my life is going). To celebrate, I made a poster for this week's FLEA movie! Shove it, Herman Melville. #storybreak

If I could write emails to my past self, they would mostly be links to #Kickstarter campaigns I just learned about, but which ended 4 weeks ago.

Anyone know if Apple or gcc developers are actively working on getting gfortran working with Apple Silicon? The lack of a fortran compiler means #rstats cannot be compiled with Apple Silicon. From gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_… it is unclear to me if anyone is actually working on this.

Code for the plot itself is here: tkoomar.github.io/post/tt-palmer… P.S. Anyone with more experience in {blogdown} know what specific setting I need to get embedded figures to always scale properly? Should I be using .Rmarkdown instead of .Rmd?

These maps use a workflow I have been working on to generate this kind of diagram heatmap, that I call Simple Features For Science {sffs}. It is still in the early stages, but I am hoping to eventually turn it into a warehouse for these kinds of plots tkoomar.github.io/sffs/

This #TidyTuesday: some pop art penguins using data and art from {palmerpenguins} / @allison_horst . Only the average bill depth is visualized here, I couldn't figure a good way to unambiguously visualize bill length too. If you have thoughts -- #Rstats community -- let me know

I have known some truly remarkable #BlackInSTEM scientists who worked harder to get to a PhD than I will have to work over the course of my whole life. They deserve better. Ending police violence is essiential, but it is only be the start of the affirmation that #BlackLivesMatter

This fact should surprise no-one with a basic sense of systemic and historic discrimination in the USA. Still, I found it particularly disheartening that (on average) advanced degrees confer basically no wealth benefit to Black Americans.

The argument that PoC just need to “get an education” to be raised up is laughable. The reality is: Black Americans *with* college degrees have roughly the same amount of economic freedom (wealth) as white Americans *without* a high school diploma. #BLM #EconomicEquality
