@JessAStern @mnoetel @kwitterlife I think a reviewer may have requested that it not be in the visual abstract because it was likely to be over-interpreted. But it is an interesting avenue that needs some more research to support its generalisability.

@JessAStern @mnoetel @JessAStern (and @kwitterlife) it's a good question. We were cautious about interpreting the dance finding because it came from a small (n~100), fairly homogenous (almost all young females) sample, and from studies with some design problems.

New research has found parents can relax a bit about the amount of screen time their kids are getting, as its effects on children aren't as harmful as previously thought.

“Today, the same arguments that were once levelled against reading, schooling and radio are being made about screen use.” But are they warranted? Here’s a breakdown of the results from a new, MASSIVE meta-analyses on associations between screens with education and health outcomes for children and teens: HEALTH ❌Internet use and social media BAD for depression ❌Social media BAD for risk taking, risky sexual behaviour and substance abuse ❌TV advertising BAD for junk food intake ✅Video games GOOD for information processing ❌TV viewing BAD for sleep duration ❌Video game playing BAD for body composition ❌❌❌Overall, NO EVIDENCE of anything positive from social media❌❌❌ EDUCATION ❌General screen use, TV viewing and video gaming BAD for learning ✅eBooks with narration, touchscreen and augmented reality education interventions GOOD for learning ✅Co-viewing and viewing educational content GOOD for literacy ✅Screen-based math interventions and video games with math GOOD for numeracy Epic piece of work from Taren Sanders and colleagues 👏👏👏 Link to full article here: nature.com/articles/s4156…

The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand
A major study of screen use found it’s not the screen itself that really matters, but what’s on it and the way kids use it. As @tarensanders + colleagues (@ACUmedia, @UQ_News) found, TV can be educational – but social media likely harms mental health. #Echobox=1699913539" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">theconversation.com/tv-can-be-educ…

1.9 million kids, 2500 primary studies, 102 meta-analysis, and now 1 umbrella review! We find that screen time is a complex issue. Effect sizes are usually small, and content seems to matter most.
