Mississippi Momentum: Madison (+ Hinds + Warren) County style!
Governor Tate Reeves@tatereeves

$25 billion total investment. 2,000 total jobs. @amazon is investing another $12 billion and creating 800 more jobs across Madison and Hinds County. That makes $25 billion and 2,000 jobs in announcements in Madison, Warren and Hinds counties in just the last two years. The company isn’t just reinvesting in our state — they are again betting on our people.  Mississippi has momentum and THIS is our time!

Yesterday, I signed 37 bills that are now law in Mississippi.   Today, I signed 17 more.   One of the bills that I signed today was the Attorney General’s appropriation bill, HB 1924. In addition to funding the annual operations of the AG’s office, the Legislature also spent approximately $30 million in opioid settlement funds through this budget. Last year, the Legislature, along with my signature, wisely set up an Opioid Settlement Fund Advisory Council. This council included Chief Justice Randolph, Attorney General Fitch, members of several executive agencies, and members of the public with expertise in substance use disorders. The council met multiple times for hours and hours to review more than 125 applications and made well-reasoned decisions on how to best allocate these funds.   The Legislature took many of the recommendations from the council, and I approved those expenditures in HB 1924. However, there were three expenditures that did not even merit an analysis in the final report of the council as sent to the Legislature. Those three programs were $500,000 to Hope Squad, $800,000 to the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, and $250,000 to Finally First. I have line item vetoed these three expenditures due to a lack of vetting by the Advisory Council established by the Legislature in the 2025 session. In total, while these three projects only represent $1.55 million of the $30+ million allocated, I believe it would be imprudent for me to approve this spending without any knowledge of what or who these entities are or the specific purpose and expertise that would warrant them receiving funds.   This is not a final determination that these three entities are not worthy of these funds, it is simply a recognition that they did not comply with the application process in current statute. I encourage them to apply during the Advisory Council’s 2026 grant cycle so they can be properly evaluated just like the other 125 applications from the 2025 cycle.

Deputy Jimerson, like all of our men and women of law enforcement, represent the very best of Mississippi. Mississippi stands with them as we honor and mourn this hero who has been taken from us too soon. In his honor, flags will be flown at half-staff on Friday, April 10.
