In 2017, Kabelo moved to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape — the ostrich capital of the world — to learn the trade. There he mastered the entire ostrich value chain: breeding, rearing, slaughtering, leather tanning, and crafting feather & eggshell products. By January 2018, he took a bold leap and started his own ostrich farm back home in Brits. He bought 17-day-old chicks, transported them from the Western Cape, and raised them in his garage. As they grew, he built a 4m × 3m shelter so they could roam outside during the day and stay safe at night. Believing in his vision, he sold his car to buy a 7-hectare farm equipped for ostrich breeding. Today, Kabelo supplies ostrich meat to major retailers and butcheries, including Woolworths, Checkers and Boxer. From raising chicks in a garage to supplying big retailers — proof that dreams grow where courage is planted. 🌱
