Map of European Russia before Communism. There was no "Ukraine" - that was a general term meaning "border region" (i.e. with Poland). Kiev was Kiev, just another Russian city, where everyone spoke Russian. Soviet Ukraine was invented by Lenin, Stalin, and Khrushchev.
