Hey folks, not doing this Twitter thing much anymore. I’m over on Mastodon: @taylorjadin" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">social.ds106.us/@taylorjadin

@btopro Thanks for being a part of it! We'll have a high-quality version posted this month (the stream went hay-wire the day of, so we had to just point the camera at the projector).

"I didn't realize how many fences we were burning down around the institution" -- talking about tech building outside of current structures was setting fire to the boundaries and policies elsewhere (unintentionally). / Almost a tangential disruption #reclaimopen

@KerryPinny @Emmadw @MarenDeepwell @sebschmoller You can set up a redirect when you leave a server for good (so folks that follow you automatically follow you in the new place) but Mastodon currently does not have any way to move your actual old posts between servers.

Mastodon is cool and you should consider checking it out. Go and pick a server on joinmastodon.org and check it out if you are interested. You can pick any server that resonates with you, and follow folks that are on other servers too.

@timmmmyboy @jimgroom Oh and also should probably do a `git checkout v3.5.3` after the clone, to avoid running a bleeding edge version.

Thanks to @TaylorJadin we got a Mastodon up and running, and Jesus H. Christ was it brutal. Definitely not a one-click installer on horizon unless there's a stable, solid Docker image floating around. More tomorrow, but what cost freedom? Sysadmin sanity...that's the cost-dammit!

@derekbruff @jimgroom @ReclaimHosting I’d stick to their official documentation, particularly to make sure you can do smooth upgrades and the like down the road: docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/prerequi… You’d start by deploying a Ubuntu 20.04 VPS, on reclaim.cloud or whatever cloud you like

@timmmmyboy I’ll say reading this and poking around mastodon more last night, I do really appreciate the actual experience of using Mastodon. It reminds me of when 3rd party twitter clients were first class citizens, a bit.

@timmmmyboy @jimgroom We should be able to clone the whole repo then use the docker-compose.yml from there. Cloning the whole repo will be necessary as the images are built from there, not downloaded from dockerhub.

@timmmmyboy @jimgroom Yep, thats exactly what I want to do next. It looks like there is no nginx or lets encrypt stuff happening there, which is honestly perfect as I figure we can change the web container to use port 80 and use a load balancer to handle reverse proxy and let’s encrypt.

@Edward_Beck @jimgroom We didn’t have luck with it, but it likely would require more experimentation. Sometimes github repos have docker-compose files for development purposes only, but in this case I do think it is AN intended way to host it, even if its poorly documented. More investigation needed.
