A thread of out-of-pocket things my white in-laws said to me this year at Christmas, as a Mexican American. (I’ve known them for 10 years - assuming due to the current political climate - they act like they just found out I’m Mexican)

*** according to my white in-laws whom I honestly do love but they try too hard to make sure I know they’re not racist….and by doing that….they say a bunch of micro-aggressions lmao***

Anyway here’s ur local white passing “the Mexican” who likes celebrating loud colorful Christmas’ eating spicy tacos with my family members aka the illegals 🤌🏼💯

Like, ok I see where they were coming from w/ this one but the way it’s worded is crazy. I do not “feel better” looking more white than other Latinx….???? In fact I wish I didn’t tbh. I’m proud to be Mexican.

Me: *trying to eat my pecan pie in peace* *gets randomly approached* “Man, at least you and your daughter look white! As messed up as that is, I bet it makes you feel better.” 👁️👄👁️

“What does ur family eat for Christmas? Tacos? Is it usually super spicy?” 👁️👄👁️

Someone else goes “I wrapped ur gifts in colorful paper bc….dont the Mexicans usually have a more colorful Christmas?” I said “I mean, maybe some families? Idk I’ve never particularly noticed that. I feel it’s pretty similar.” 👁️👄👁️

Them: so how is ur family been?” Me, thinking they meant that in a normal way: “Oh, they’re good!” then they cut me off: “OH I meant like bc of ICE and the deportations, like how have they been with all that? Did anyone get deported or harassed or anything?” 👁️👄👁️
