I wondered if I read these reports correctly...because I could not believe that in 2026, this is the type of comment being made by a female member of Parliament! What a retrogressive statement and state of mind! You know, when measured against other countries across the world, Jamaica is one of the better performing countries in terms of women in leadership. But we are not without challenges, and gains can be lost if we are not careful. It is one thing when the efforts at disempowerment come from predictable male spaces - an entirely different thing when they come from women who should be fighting the same battles. @JulietHolness has been an exemplary role model and an inspiration to countless girls who aspire to be strong leaders - long may she continue to do so despite the best efforts of some - including those who have yet to achieve a fraction of what the Speaker has professionally, politically and otherwise! Just incredible. Clearly an apology is unlikely from this quarter, but I hope that even one person in the PNP Women's movement will at least sit down with Ms Burchell and give her some counsel.

South St. James Member of Parliament Nekeisha Burchell says House Speaker Juliet Holness has been exhibiting control tendencies similar to women who are able to control their husbands. READ MORE HERE: revonews.ai/news/burchell-…

Jamaica continues to rely heavily on the men and women of the Jamaica Constabulary Force as they work every day to protect our citizens, maintain order, and respond to crime and community needs. Over the years, my administration has made sustained investments in the JCF, including training, equipment, technology, infrastructure, and operational support. The force has now reached its full establishment of 40,000 officers, strengthening its ability to serve across the country with greater presence and response capacity. As the JCF expands, I emphasize the importance of discipline, accountability, communication, and continuous training to ensure high standards are maintained. I remain committed to supporting the ongoing development of the JCF as we work to build a safer Jamaica.

When I accepted the invitation to speak at the graduation exercise for Cohort 91 of the Staff and Junior Command Course at the National Police College of Jamaica, I did not know that the nation would be facing such a painful and deeply concerning incident involving the loss of Latoya Bulgin’s life in St. James. Less than a week ago, Latoya Bulgin from St. James lost her life in a police-involved shooting. I extend my sincere condolences to her family, friends, community, and all Jamaicans who are grieving. I understand the pain, concern, and emotions surrounding this matter. As Prime Minister, I believe it is important that I speak carefully and responsibly, especially on matters involving loss of life and ongoing investigations. I am encouraged that the police high command acted swiftly, that the officer involved has been interdicted, and that the independent investigative process is now underway. At the heart of this issue is humanity, dignity, and respect for life. The role of the Jamaica Constabulary Force is to protect, serve, and preserve life. That must always remain the guiding principle of policing in Jamaica. I also reaffirm the importance of independent oversight and accountability. Jamaica has established systems to ensure that police-involved shootings are independently investigated, giving the public confidence that the rule of law applies to everyone. As leaders within the force, officers must continue to uphold professionalism, discipline, and respect for human life in every operation and every interaction with the public.

Facing a wave of public backlash over the treatment of a woman shot by a cop and loaded into the back of a police pickup last Sunday, Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness has directed the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to urgently review and reform its procedures for dealing with injured and dead people at crime scenes, stressing that their first and foremost duty ought to be the preservation and protection of human life. jamaicaobserver.com/2026/05/23/buj…

The nomination of controversial political figure and former TV anchor Kari Lake Halperin as the next United States ambassador to Jamaica has drawn mixed reactions from local commentators over what the potential appointment could mean for the island’s relations with Washington. Lake Halperin is considered a MAGA (Make America Great Again) diehard, whose time as the head of the US Agency for Global Media saw her controversially move to terminate hundreds of jobs at global broadcaster Voice of America under the direction of US President Donald Trump. jamaicaobserver.com/2026/05/15/mag…

In the aftermath of one of the most powerful hurricanes to impact Jamaica, I reflected on the strength of our people. While the damage across parishes like Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, St. James, Hanover, and St. Ann has been severe, with losses estimated at over 50% of our GDP, we are still standing. I give God thanks, because though it was bad, it could have been far worse. We must now be more prepared than before. Another weather event will come, and we have to ensure that we are better equipped to protect our homes, our families, and our future. Preparedness is part of our faith. A prepared people will always recover faster and rise stronger.
