We’re seriously at a place in sports history where media is complaining about coaches yelling at players?! Young men need to be held accountable/to a high standard, so they can reach their full potential. Like Charles Barkley said, “This is called coaching” I got my butt chewed out countless times in my playing career. It sucked, but it made me a better player, though. I knew getting chewed out was not about breaking me down, so the coach could simply go on a power trip like an abusive parent letting anger get the best of him. They yelled (coached) because they cared & knew I had an achievable standard I wasn’t living up to at times. Coddling kids won’t refine them and it certainly won’t make them reliable teammates on their teams, in their future workplaces, & within their families. A gentle parenting style of coaching won’t win you championship. It’ll make weak, unaccountable, selfish players, who cower when the lights are brightest and the going gets tough on and off the court. Tom Izzo is right. America has gotten soft. We need to get back to embracing masculinity in its purest forms.
