My general rule for estimating how long a project or an experiment will take to complete in science is to estimate, then double the estimate, then say to myself “really? it can’t possibly take that long!”, and then double the estimate again.

@danacoledares In my NJ experience, auto shop seems to be outlasting wood shop, which funny enough, outlasted metal shop. I suspect district re-investment in vo-techs is part of the reason, and national social devaluing of trades is most of the rest. Plus liability!

(Way) back in MY day, those job skills were called "industrial arts" as both a connection to and a contrast with "fine arts." Is there less focus on those disciplines now than there was 10, 20, 30 years ago? #EdChat

@danacoledares I understand the origin of STEM. I’m a proponent of STEAM. Without The Arts (including language arts), you end up with technologists and engineers that don’t understand or care enough about human solutions. Dr. Raven the Science Maven is a great example of STEAM goals.

Neurospicy problems: in real life, I get a lot of “are you okay”s and “are you lost”s from people because I’m often silently stressed out about nonverbal communication, innuendos, and sarcasm. It shows on my face. I’m still learning how to navigate people’s misunderstandings 1/

@b_roxanne_ It’s a good start that she is at least getting interviews. Does your area include demo lessons in its process? —— Just like in industry, job listings are not as “sure” as they seem. The situation may change with say, enrollment, and they no longer need a new staff member.
