Partnerships that create opportunities. Newton County Schools and Amazon recently celebrated the launch of an Amazon Think Big Corner at Newton County STEAM Academy — a hands-on STEM minilab designed to spark curiosity and innovation. While the space is located at the STEAM Academy, the opportunities it creates will extend far beyond one campus. Through this initiative, students across Newton County Schools will have access to innovative tools like robotics, drones, and 3D printers as they explore STEM concepts through hands-on learning. Watch the video to see how this partnership is helping expand STEM learning experiences for students across Newton County Schools.

What happens when an entire community rallies around literacy? More than 3,500 students and families. 55,000+ books distributed. One unforgettable day celebrating the joy of reading. Our 3rd Annual Literacy Extravaganza at Newton High School was filled with excitement — from overflowing book bags and author meet-and-greets to hands-on STEM activities, student performances, therapy dogs, and community partnerships that made it all possible. This highlight video captures just a glimpse of the energy, connection, and purpose behind the event. Watch, share, and celebrate how Newton County Schools continues to make reading visible, valued, and celebrated across our community. 📚✨

My mother, Coretta Scott King, is Black history. She was more than the wife of my father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She was the founder of The King Center, a global peacemaker, and a steadfast architect of justice. Her courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to nonviolence helped carry the Movement forward and expand its reach around the world. Black history is not only something we study. It is something we live, protect, and continue. #CorettaScottKing #BlackHistoryMonth #MLK #BelovedCommunity #TheKingCenter

As we continue celebrating a century of Black history—past and present—Newton County Schools proudly honors the pioneers who forever changed the course of our district’s history. Today’s Black History Month spotlight recognizes Mrs. Louise Adams, a true trailblazer and community icon. Mrs. Adams made history as the first Black female principal in Newton County Schools when she was selected to lead Ficquett Elementary School, a role she held from 1981 through 1995. Before serving as a principal, Mrs. Adams helped integrate Newton County Schools as the first Black teacher in a previously all-white school, teaching seventh and eighth grade at Old Porterdale. Her courage, leadership, and commitment to students opened doors that had never before been opened. Mrs. Adams and her husband, Mr. T.K. Adams, were also the first inductees into the Newton County Schools Educator Hall of Fame—a testament to their lasting impact on generations of students and educators. We are proud to celebrate Mrs. Louise Adams’ extraordinary legacy and the path she paved for those who followed. Stay tuned as we continue highlighting Newton County Schools trailblazers throughout Black History Month.

History is being rewritten inside one of America’s most prestigious hospitals. For the first time ever, the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery service at Johns Hopkins Hospital is being led by five Black surgeons. All which are senior residents, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The team includes highly accomplished physicians with two PhDs and six master’s degrees among them, including Dr. Lawrence B. Brown and Dr. Zachary Numa. Together, they are leading care at a Level 1 trauma center in a field where only 6% of surgeons nationwide are Black. And the symbolism runs deep. There was a time when Black patients were not allowed to be treated at Johns Hopkins. Today, Black surgeons are leading critical care inside its walls. As the team shared, this moment represents “our ancestors’ wildest dreams.” 🖤 Credit: @abcnews

“Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow — red, yellow, brown, black and white — and we're all precious in God's sight.” 🌈 Honoring the incredible life of Rev. Jesse Jackson. A champion for the marginalized and a voice for the voiceless. Rest in power!🕊️🙏🏽
