Almost 25 years since community cohesion developed in response to 2001 riots. But no consistent or coherent strategy, just a new flurry of activity after each new conflict. But we now have ‘Protecting What Matters’ a new cohesion strategy (March 2026). Will this suffice?

This is the war we should be fighting, where the threats are real and evidenced, where enemies are only those we conjure up to justify our own divisive view of the world. ‘UN issues new climate warning as El Niño looms bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The @NatSecSoc has done a great job in exposing this misogyny - but it is entitled to ask why government institutions had failed to intervene. And will the measures in the new ‘Protecting What Matters’ cohesion strategy make its role redundant? Unlikely I think

Our work on Hatch End Islamic Centre - where a preacher described it as “mandatory” for women to do the housework and serve their husbands - is covered in the Times, with ref. to the broader issue of toothless regulatory action on religious charities👇 thetimes.com/uk/religion/ar…

One small, but important, commitment in this new Cohesion strategy is to publish a Local Media Strategy. This is vital to offer an authoritative voice to counter misinformation on social media and to build sustainable local journalism gov.uk/government/pub…

This is a reasonably fair and balanced assessment, but the door is now open for local communities to determine their own cohesion priorities and practices. Cohesion has to be done with communities, not to them. Let’s get started

The government’s new social cohesion strategy reaffirms important liberal principles — including free expression. But it continues to carve out special protections for religion. Read the full op-ed 👇 secularism.org.uk/opinion/2026/0…

This new Government cohesion strategy is a vital step forward. But how big a step remains to be seen. It has so much ground to cover, community relations have never been this fragile. It needs long term investment, with progress measured each year. gov.uk/government/pub…

We need a shout out for BBC Countryfile tonight @CountryfileMag for raising really important environmental issues for our farmers and for our future food supply. Very few others are talking about them - unfortunately. ‘The beet goes on’, if we are lucky!

The US State Dept hosted British Far Right figure Tommy Robinson this week. Even I’m shocked. An ally together with which we have supported democracy for the last 80 years is now succouring pro-Putin political extremism in Europe. It’s hard to believe but sadly our new reality.

Great story for sustainability, a family firm using returnable and refillable bottles rather than plastic (or glass that would waste energy to crush and reconstruct them) Deposit system seems a no-brainer for all wine, beer, soft drink and other bottles bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Really good to see this crucial issue raised, such good comments too, which is not always the case for this type of discussion. Also need to consider Putnam’s important distinction of ‘bridging’ social capital which is crucial for cohesion and evidence of decline in UK at least
Lauren Wilford@lauren_wilford

I’m reading Bowling Alone and I’m laughing at the fact that every single one of the things Putnam lists a frequent point of “informal connection” is going (or has already gone) extinct drinks after work coffee with regulars at the diner poker night gossip with neighbors etc

To make this work, admissions policies need to be a fairer so that SEN children are admitted by all schools, as some schools, surprisingly including faith schools, have policies that exclude them bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

This could work But only if Trusts learn how to collaborate with each other on admissions and take an equal responsibility for SEN, social class an integration. “All state schools will have to join trusts in education overhaul” thetimes.com/article/928bd3…

This sounds great, but it doesn’t seem to get near to the reality on the ground. Calling for ‘independent, free and pluralistic media’ in itself, seems to ignore the grim downward spiral now at work. Who do they think will make any of this happen?
