NEW: Federal officials have subpoenaed Hasan Piker and CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin over an aid mission to Cuba involving medicine and medical equipment. According to reports, the Treasury Department is investigating whether the activists violated U.S. sanctions during the trip.

Cuba was at one time a free and sovereign country. Then Fidel Castro murdered his way into power and with some help from the former Soviet Union became a dictator and ruled over the little island since 1959, about 66 years. Now the fight for both leadership and sovereignty is back on in Cuba. In part there is an ongoing embargo to try to ensure Russia remains sidelined from exerting undue influence over Cuba, along with several other European and Asian nations. Violating US Sanctions is a serious matter and is far more than 'delivering Band aids to needy people.' They willingly, intentionally evade attempts to ensure the legitimacy of the smuggled medications. There is no inspection or testing for foods or other goods smuggled in. And it's completely illegal under international maritime law. Piker and Benjamin deserve to be investigated and prosecuted for all violations found.
