In 2001, Lata Mangeshkar is awarded the Bharat Ratna. Seven years later, P. Susheela amma, the foundational blueprint, melody Queen of South India is given a mere Padma Bhushan. Twelve years later, S. Janaki, a vocal powerhouse of unmatched emotional range and nightingale of South is offered the exact same consolation prize, which she rightfully rejects.
The logic of National recognition in India is broken, and the timeline proves it. It takes decades of unparalleled, multi-lingual brilliance from Southern icons to even register as a footnote in New Delhi.
This isn't just about music. It is the structural reality of the country. From the revenue formulas that tax the South to subsidize the North, to the gatekept corridors of the Union Cabinet, the highest judiciary, and central contracts, the pattern is unyielding. The South is expected to perform like a powerhouse, but is treated like a secondary territory.
In every single walk of life, the message remains the same: the South does the heavy lifting, but to India, it is just the bloody South. Let that sink in.

S. Janaki, the "Nightingale of the South" and the Humming Queen of Indian music has left us. Her unmatched legacy deserved the highest honors much earlier; when she was finally offered the Padma Bhushan, it came too late (2013), and she rightfully declined it. While artists like Lata Mangeshkar were rightfully celebrated with the Bharat Ratna (2001), Janaki Amma never received the credit she truly earned. This is a reflection of a larger, unfortunate reality, how the South is consistently overlooked and given the least preference across all fields. Rest in peace, Janaki Amma. Your divine voice and incredible legacy will be remembered forever.

Latha Mangeshkar sung predominantly in Hindi. She’s called ‘Nightingale of India’; and was awarded Bharat Ratna, in 2001.
S.Janaki sung loads of songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam; but she’s only ‘Nightingale of South India’; was awarded PadmaBhushan, in 2013, which she politely declined.
The pernicious notion that ‘Hindi is India,’ is hurting all of us a great deal. High time we woke up #SJanaki
