Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have lost an appeal against a court decision that saw them pay former player Anwar El Ghazi €1.5million (£1.3m; $1.7m) after they were found to have unfairly dismissed him. El Ghazi had his contract terminated by the club on November 3, 2023 after posting about the Israel-Gaza war on social media. El Ghazi was initially suspended by Mainz in October of that year for the pro-Palestinian post, with the club describing it as “unacceptable”. His suspension was lifted shortly after and Mainz said that they had warned the player, who had shown “remorse”.
