Activist Ter Manyang says he was assaulted and arrested by security at Freedom Hall Activist Ter Manyang Gatwech has accused South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS) of assaulting and unlawfully detaining him as he attempted to attend court hearings at Freedom Hall on Monday morning. Ter, who is the Executive Director of the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), said he arrived at the venue at 8:00 AM but was denied entry under claims that he was late. He alleged that officers then attacked him, kicking him in the head and neck before covering his face with a cloth and forcing him into a security vehicle. “They told me they had been looking for me. I was subjected to degrading treatment and targeted because I am a Nuer human rights defender,” Ter said in a statement. According to him, he was later handed over to police, driven around Juba for nearly half an hour, and then returned to Freedom Hall, where an officer remarked that he was “lucky” to hold an international human rights identification card. The activist condemned what he described as arbitrary arrest, ethnic-based discrimination, and harassment of civil society voices. He urged the government to ensure accountability within the security sector and called on international partners to pressure South Sudan to end arbitrary arrests and impunity. Authorities are yet to respond to the allegations.
