my dad retired at 59. I’ll still be working at 59. He had a pension. I have a 401k I fund when I can afford to. He bought his house at 28. I’m 31 staring at a down payment I can’t touch. He paid $90 a month for health insurance. I pay $430 for a plan that still left me with a $3,200 bill last year. Last Sunday he looked across the dinner table and said: “You just need to be smarter with money son.” I smiled. Didn’t mention the economy he thrived in doesn’t exist anymore. Didn’t mention I’m funding his Social Security while mine gets gutted. Didn’t mention the ladder he climbed got pulled up the second he reached the top. Didn’t mention I followed his exact blueprint and ended up somewhere completely different. Just said “I know dad.” Cut my chicken. And stared at a plate I was grateful for while quietly doing math in my head about next month’s rent.

Whoops! Earlier this week, while running down the stairs in a rush, I tripped and ended up breaking my ankle—I wouldn’t recommend it. 🙃 Next week, I’ll be back at the Capitol for votes and hearings and doing everything else I can to be a voice for Washington state in the Senate—I’ll just be swapping one of my tennis shoes for an ankle brace for a bit. Whether on foot, crutches, or wheels—I have no doubt I’ll still be one of the fastest Senators, and I hope to be speed walking through the halls of Congress again very soon. My neighbor seriously built a deck like 3 inches from my fence… 😭 No conversation. No warning. No consideration whatsoever. Now every time I walk into my backyard it feels like their entire deck is basically sitting on top of my property line. I spent weeks making this dress for my daughter's first time as a flower girl, and I was so proud of how it turned out. The lace details, the long train, the delicate sleeves - I thought it was perfect for such a special day. But now my sister is saying it's "way too much" and that my daughter looks like she's competing with the bride. The bride herself said it was beautiful, but I can't shake the feeling she might just be being polite because she doesn't want to hurt my feelings. I'm honestly panicking now. Should I make a completely new dress? Try to alter this one? I got so much help from the sewing community on the Tedooo app since I'm still pretty new to this, and everyone there was so encouraging. But maybe I got carried away and created something too elaborate? I just wanted my little girl to feel like a princess, but not at the expense of overshadowing the bride on her special day.
