This is not politics as usual. We’ve never had an openly authoritarian leader in office. Nor have we had a party totally subservient to their leader. We must resist as such during these not normal times.

This is one of my favorite memories of my mom, dancing to the Bee Gees at 91 years old, with her portable oxygen and her beautiful smile. Graceful, joyful, strong, and full of life until the very end. I miss her every single day. Happy Heavenly Birthday Mom! 👩 😍

If you logged on today just to point out that Paul McCartney doesn’t sing like he did decades ago, maybe take a moment to rethink how you’re spending your energy. The man is nearly 84, a living Beatle, and still out there bringing joy to millions. That alone is worth celebrating.

Good morning. I wanted to post this mental health lesson this morning about something called Emotional Stacking. The lesson starts with my dog Copper and becomes a lesson on how people can better handle emotions. (Dogs are awesome, btw, and we can learn a lot from them.) I adopted Copper 15 months ago; he was 6. He is large for a beagle, very muscular, probably a hound mix. One of the things that attracted me to him on the rescue's website was all their cautionary language about how he can be reactive. Reactivity in a dog is NOT the same as aggression - reactivity is fear-based; with triggers. I welcomed the challenge. Copper has been doing so well; he has an infectious high-pitched bark, a master scavenger, the entire neighborhood loves him. I post about him often - he is a very good boy and wants to be. He doesn't get triggered much outside the home anymore, but he sees the home, couch, and yard as resources, and can be protective. This morning, at 5:30A, he got triggered in the yard when he came face to face with a possum. I was able to separate them to avoid carnage, but it wasn't easy and when Copper's emotions get ratcheted, I have to be careful, especially when he growls at me. An hour after this incident, I took him to a Starbucks as I always do, but he was still amped. He barked at a couple dogs on the way, and at people inside Starbucks, in a not-so-friendly way. When a formerly reactive dog suddenly has a new reactive episode, it can be seen as regression. It can also be the result of discomfort. But not here. For Copper - it was "emotional stacking." Emotional stacking in dogs happens when multiple stressors build up over a short period and push a dog closer to, or beyond, a threshold. In other words, Copper's possum encounter had ramped up his emotions and he was still amped at Starbucks. Of course, dogs act on instinct and people - most people - are more reasoned. I didn't let anyone pet Copper today - because I was more reasoned than my dog and I wanted to negate the impact and instinctual behavior borne of his emotional stacking. The term emotional stacking IN PEOPLE is a series of techniques that involve recognizing and managing your emotions to distance yourself from triggers and thresholds from emotional buildup and help create a more positive mindset and emotional resilience. Many of us are going to want to understand and use this as we face the nefarious and uncomfortable days ahead, leading to the midterms - the big battle for our democracy. Awareness: The first step is to become aware of your emotions. This involves recognizing feelings that may seem small or insignificant but can accumulate, like with Copper and the possum. Reflection: Ask yourself questions. Reflect on the emotions you might be stacking. Ask yourself what triggers you. Reframing: Once you identify the emotions, work on reframing them - alter your perspective so that you can focus on solutions. For some, it will be affirmational, for others it will be renewed resolve, or the practice of self-care - like mindfulness, exercise, or hobbies that bring joy. Now let's bring it home: The Chaos Theory of authoritarians is meant to induce futility, apathy, and other reactions but what it really induces is emotional stacking. We need to be less susceptible to that, thru awareness and reflection. The MAGA base defaults to feelings and beliefs. They often suppress reasoned thought. They react to emotional stacking the way Copper did. They're not nearly as cuddly, but they're reactive dogs who don't have the propensity to be reflective - and that is our advantage. You and I need to be trained to win. We need to be more resilient AND to do that, more aware. We need to be Copper AND we need to be Copper's daddy at the same time and ensure that our emotional stacking impulses don't overwhelm and prevail. A combined awareness and focus WILL help us diffuse chaos and other weapons of authoritarianism and will be a competitive advantage against MAGA - a subculture that has trouble with truth and reflection. This will help us - and democracy - to prevail. (Pictured is Copper and me when we first met at the rescue; and Copper rolling in the yard 3 hours after the possum encounter, his emotional stacking subsided.)

Too often lost amid the chaos and struggles of the day, are these two points: 1. He ran for president to distract from his criminality and shorten the clock, and thus stay out of jail. 2. He started this bullshit war to feed his craving for grandiosity and distract from the fact that he’s all over the Epstein files.
