Germany has missed NATO’s 2% defense spending target for nearly twenty years.
Last week Chancellor Merz called Washington’s handling of Iran humiliating.
5,000 U.S. troops are coming home from Germany. That is about 14% of the 36,000 American service members stationed there.
The Pentagon confirmed Friday. A full brigade combat team and a long-range fires unit. Gone within 6 to 12 months.
Trump told reporters Saturday the cuts will go “a lot further” than 5,000.
Defense Secretary Hegseth ordered the drawdown after a Pentagon review of U.S. posture in Europe.
America has subsidized European security since 1945.

I think we can all agree that Europe doesn’t want or need US troops spread across 19 of its nations. It is time to shutter our bases and evacuate the 100,000 remaining soldiers in Europe. We can remain part of NATO for as long as it makes sense. As for the loss of the bases reducing our ability to project power throughout your hemisphere - perhaps the world would be better off if we had less ability to start wars.
