The 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally has been installed at Canterbury Cathedral in a service that gathered Primates and Anglican representatives from all around the world. Her inaugural sermon appealed for the global church to respond to the call of Christ: ‘Our world today needs the love, healing and hope that we find in Jesus Christ. I continue to pray that we renew our confidence in this good news, and recommit ourselves to sharing the joy of the Gospel.’ She called for: ‘A church for the whole nation and for the world, which looks for ways of joining with people of all faiths and none, in acts of service that will transform. A church which extends around the world, with our sister churches in the Anglican Communion, as part of the one holy, catholic and apostolic Church, to embody Christ’s love.’ Read more on Anglican News: bit.ly/4v9Ol4H Photo credit: Neil Turner / Lambeth Palace

Today the Church remembers Joseph of Nazareth, the one entrusted with the care of Mary and the child Jesus. The Gospels tell us little about Joseph’s words, but much about his actions. Faced with uncertainty and fear, Joseph chooses compassion, obedience and trust in God’s guidance. His faith is lived quietly, through care, protection and faithfulness to what God has asked of him. Bible reading: Matthew 1:19–20 ‘Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”’ Prayer Faithful God, you call us to trust you even when the way is unclear. Give us the courage of Joseph, to act with compassion, humility and obedience. Help us to listen for your guidance and to serve your purposes quietly and faithfully, placing our lives in your care. Amen. Artwork: Icon featuring Jesus, Joseph and Mary in the Nazareth Melkite Chuch, Galilee, Israel.
