Women like her became successful entrepreneurs in the 1800s, even becoming the first Black female millionaire in America. Yet, feminists often claim that women couldn’t work or get an education during that time. How is it that a Black woman, who started from a plantation background, was able to build a business, register it, earn millions, and even attend night school to gain a formal education? Are we really supposed to believe that she could achieve all of this despite facing both racial and gender barriers, but white women had no access to education or employment at all? That argument doesn’t seem consistent. It’s also worth noting that women’s right to vote wasn’t granted until the 1920s. Still, there are documented cases of women in the 1800s and early 1900s working as athletes, actresses, nurses, and in other professions. So how were these women able to accomplish these things if women supposedly had no opportunities? Is there something I am missing?
