@thesoyjim @UnseenJapanSite Public (state) High schools in Tokyo prefecture did not cost any money, but that was a prefectural thing, not a national thing. High school education is not compulsory and therefore other public high schools had some sort of course fee associated with them.

As of April, Japan will make high school free for all with a budget revision that lifts income limits on subsidies to pay school course fees. Japan's far right is lambasting the move as a waste of taxpayer money. However, public opinion polls show fairly broad support.

Perfect example of linguistic tunnel vision (or fake globalism). Lotte looked at popular 2017 names for the Japanese names, but seemingly chose English names at random and ended up with boomer-era names almost no 7-year old in Japa will have.

Lotte has released Koala March with names on the snacks. Lotte says the rough target market for the snacks is 7 year olds, so names were chosen based on popularity lists for 2017 births. Some surnames and foreign katakana names are also in the mix. yomiuri.co.jp/otekomachi/202…

A major victory for trans rights in Japan: a family court in Okayama Prefecture ruled that 50yo transgender man Usui Takakiito could legally change his gender w/o legally required reassignment surgery. Japan’s Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional last year.
