China has a robust model of what it calls “whole-process people’s democracy.” As @jasonhickel and I argue in this piece, this system is in many ways more participatory and more responsive to the material needs of the people than any liberal democracy. It combines a vibrant model of electoral democracy — the largest in the world by number of voters — with systems of consultation in which the people are continuously involved in governance through a broad range of processes and institutions. The Chinese people overwhelmingly agree. Global studies on perceptions of democracy regularly show that they consider their system to be fairer and more democratic than the citizens of almost any other country on earth. Crucially, unlike Western systems, the Chinese model does not presume its perfection or completeness. BREAKING: Armed Israeli forces have intercepted ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla off the coast of Gaza. On board were dozens of non-violent activists, including Artists Against Apartheid Carsie Blanton and Leila Hegazy. The flotilla, the largest civilian aid convoy in history, was carrying urgent humanitarian supplies in an effort to break the siege on Gaza.
