Multi-party custody is easy when a transaction is a signature. It gets hard fast when a transaction is a zk proof. Why is this the case? In most private protocols the transaction isn't a simple signature but a zk proof. So instead of threshold signatures you need threshold zk proofs, which means running the entire prover (Groth16, Halo2, Plonk, etc.) under MPC. That's exactly what collaborative SNARKs are built for. It's striking, then, how little the original paper or follow-up literature treats this as a motivating use case. Probably because privacy was mostly built with individual users in mind, with institutions, operations, and multi-party custody as a secondary concern. But once you want to hold and operate shielded tokens in a multisig, you can't unsee the problem.

That’s true for web2 products because all of them have better privacy than Solana or any other major L1. WhatsApp had a lot more privacy even before e2e than blockchains today. There are a lot of onchain use cases that will achieve PMF with privacy.
