It's yet another "think of the children" moral framing turned into mass collection of private information, ripe for data leaks and mass doxxing. This all started because a 13-year-old girl was contacted by strangers online within a minute for explicit sexual acts, with over 400k cases of child sexual exploitation reported in just 2025 alone. In an age where parents had more attention for their kids, this would not be happening. Kids should not be on social media, and because two-income households are common, the adults don't have the time or energy to police their kids' online habits. Instead, even among the conservatives, who typically prefer less government interference, are pushing for more state-sponsored surveillance and "child protection". Kids these days are very tech-savvy and can easily bypass these interventions using VPNs and various other tools. When age restrictions were rolled out in Australia, it only had a small effect on actually curbing minors' access to social media. The real fix is more parents actually parenting, not allowing the government to take away your privacy. This is going to lead to a chilling effect on free speech, as more and more people end up getting into "legal troubles" over what they say online.
