It is always powerful to hear leaders speak about the women who shaped their lives. The discipline of mothers, the resilience of sisters, and the hopes we carry for our daughters are stories many of us share. But honouring the women in our lives must also mean protecting the girls of today. In Sierra Leone, the future of many daughters is still shaped by harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation. As a survivor and someone who has spent over 30 years advocating to end FGM and violence against women and girls, and written to President Bio on many occasions and had not responded in fact he blocked me on hère I know the courage it takes for survivors to speak out, often in the face of threats and silence. Too often we hear strong speeches about supporting women and even claims of being a “HeForShe.” But true leadership for women and girls is not measured in speeches or slogans. It is measured in the political courage to confront harmful practices and pass laws that protect girls. If we truly want to honour our mothers, sisters, and daughters, then the protection of girls must go beyond words. Every girl in Sierra Leone deserves to grow up safe, healthy, and free from harm. Respect for women must also mean justice and protection for girls. #EndFGM #GirlsRights #SierraLeone

On the eve of Intrrnational Womens Day It’s interesting to watch global conversations by H. E. @FirstLadyBio and @sherylsandberg about ending child marriage led by voices from countries where another harmful practice affecting girls continues to be politically protected. Child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are not separate issues. They are rooted in the same system that controls girls’ bodies, limits their choices, and normalises harm in the name of culture. So while the world hears strong commitments about protecting girls, many of us from Sierra Leone are still waiting for the same courage when it comes to ending FGM. You cannot champion girls’ rights on the global stage while remaining silent about the cutting of girls at home. Protecting girls requires consistency, not selective advocacy. Every girl deserves freedom from all harmful practices. #EndChildMarriage #EndFGM #GirlsRights #SierraLeone facebook.com/share/v/18JhGy…

I am deeply shocked and profoundly saddened by the assassination of Yanar Mohammed, one of the most courageous and principled women’s rights activists of our time. Her death in Baghdad is not only a grave loss for Iraq but a devastating blow to the global struggle for gender equality and human rights. Yanar like her peers delivered an unwavering commitment to defending women against violence, displacement, and systemic repression inspired activists around the world. As someone who has worked alongside grassroots advocates and celebrated her leadership in the U.K. when she received a True Hero Award from an Iranian Kurdish Women’s Rights Organization (@IKWRO - WOMEN'S RIGHTS ORGANISATION ), I know the courage it takes to stand up for women’s rights in the face of relentless threats. Yanar stood that ground every day. This tragic killing underscores the severe risks faced by women human rights defenders, and it must compel us to renew our solidarity, our advocacy, and our support for those continuing this work in Iraq and beyond. Yanar’s legacy will live on in the lives she saved and the movement she helped build. linkedin.com/pulse/assassin…

Former Sierra Leone Embassy Driver Sentenced Five Years for Cocaine Trafficking Mohamed Kamara, a former official driver for the Sierra Leone Embassy in Guinea, was sentenced to five years in prison following a high-profile trial that exposed the abuse of diplomatic privileges. In February 2026, the Kaloum High Court in Conakry found Kamara guilty of multiple counts of international cocaine trafficking. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a mandatory 10-year ban on Kamara entering Guinean territory, which will take effect immediately upon his completion of the five-year sentence. The investigation began in January 2025, when Guinean authorities impounded a vehicle belonging to Sierra Leone's embassy and detained its occupants on suspicion of carrying "substances suspected to be cocaine." Investigators reported discovering a large sum of cash and seven suitcases inside the embassy utility vehicle. #SierraLeone
